Fort Defiance Va Sept 10h 1884 Mr. Lyman C. Draper – Dear sir – Yours of the 5h inst recd this morning—Maj J.M. McCue refered you to one that has not kept posted on family history. Some 8 or 10 years since – a Mr. Winters came here from Pa looking up his kindred – We knew Danl Boone had visited his kindred here from an old family servant & he claimed to have gone with Boone from Uncle Geo. Crawford to Henry Miller’s about 15 miles in N-W- part of the county – 1 – I have no information of the time he was at Henry Miller’s. The old servant told of some of Boone shooting Deer while he was on the River at Mr. Crawford’s, 2 – Henry Miller (all the Miller family always claimed he) was from Pensylvania. 3 – Can’t give you the names of the parents of Mrs. Winters 4 – Maj. M. Hanger of Staunton Va – is a grand son of Geo. Crawford -- & his father Peter Hanger, I think has Geo. Crawford’s family record – 5 – Geo. Crawford’s father was Patrick – N-E- from Miller’s Iron Works 15 miles, on Middle river – I now live on the farm that Geo. Crawford inherited from his father Patrick. I am a Grand son of John, a brother of Geo. Crawford that married Miss Winters, a sister of Henry Miller’s wife – 6 – The old servant I spoke of died 2 years since at the advanced age of 112 years – He said one morning while Boone was at Uncle George’s, he called “Daniel – get your Rifle – there are 5 deer in sight” – he said to uncle G – “name the one you want;” he said “give me the large Buck” – at the crack of the Rifle the Buck dropp’d – Danl said – “I have killed him; you stick him” – The old man was very fond of telling of Boone’s visit. Yours very truly, John H. Crawford
