Smith, July 1, 2002 Preface The book contains errors. We are trying to clean them up but: 1. The grave stone does not agree with the family bible. 2. The names and dates in the bible were written in well after the fact, and are the best recollection of who ever wrote them. We can't read their handwriting. 3. The ship's captain couldn't spell any better than ggggg.....g grandpa 4. "Standard Spelling" is a relatively recent invention. 5. The census worker couldn't spell and had really bad handwriting that day. 6. The newspaper misprinted the names and dates in the 'obit. 7. The courthouse burned down and/or was flooded, so the original records are not available. 8. Translation from old high German to modern English is not an exact science. 9. The church records were destroyed in the same fire/flood. 10. We have the person's name on four different documents and it is spelled 4 different ways. 11. Some information appears to have been altered or excised by little old ladies who's sensibilities were offended. 12. Military records are maintained by staff clerks who can neither write nor spell. 13. The ink has faded, and you wouldn't believe the stains on these documents. 14. Not every girl knows who the father was, or tells. The fathers are even less certain. We are going by the official family story until the DNA tests come back. 15. Mandatory reporting of births, deaths, and marriages is a relatively recent invention. 16. The entire census for this county was lost. (It was probably legible.) 17. Rather than research which John or Abraham was their ancestor, someone guessed. Page 2 Foreword The compiler of this work would like to acknowledge and thank all of the family researchers who have worked over the years to put together this puzzle. The puzzle is not complete. I have over 1,000 individuals listed in my data with a Latshaw/Latsha/Lotshaw/Letshaw etc. family name, but no clear link to the main family line. I hope that in publishing the information we have compiled to date, others may be able to piece in how their family belongs to this line. As note (with a smile) in the Preface, there are errors in this book. It is hard to read old records, people make mistakes, and even typewritten information can contain typos. Bad guesses get put into books (like this one) and people take it as fact from then on. If you find such an error in this book, let me know at: gsmith13@kc.rr.com. I plan to re-issue the book from time to time with corrections and additional information. The book currently contains only information from 1601 to about 1901. As so many have requested, I am not publishing information between 1901 and 2001 in order to protect the privacy of those who are still living. I never visited a graveyard, courthouse or even a family history center to collect this information. All of the hard work was done by others. I only type things into a computer. I have tried to acknowledge these "hard leg-work" sources in the Bibliography, but I am sure that there are hundreds, if not thousands, of others who have contributed to the research on the family. I do not know their names. I honestly want to thank all of you. And in return, I give this book; to remember your efforts to keep our family history alive. Gary D. Family Name 1 Lötscher Notes for Family Name Lötscher: (Latschar, Lachat, L”rsch, L”rtscher, Latschaw, Lotshaw, Leutscher, Lötscher) A Mennonite family name, derives from Lötscher from Latterbach near Erlenbach in the Simmental, canton of Bern, Switzerland. The first member of this family known to have been an Anabaptist was Hans Lötscher, who was born in Latterbach in 1601. He wrote a hymn of 41 stanzas entitled "Ein sch”n new geistlich Lied." In 1633 he married Anna Kammerer from Latterbach. The three oldest of their five children, Hans, Melchior, and Anna, were brought before the T„uferkommission in Bern because of their Anabaptist beliefs. They remained true to their faith and were imprisoned. The brothers Hans and Melchior escaped in 1667 but were soon returned to prison. After four years in prison at Bern they were sentenced to galley service with four other Anabaptists in 1671-73. They returned to claim their inheritance from their father, who had died while they were away, but were refused it. In 1667, while imprisoned at Bern, Hans Lötscher wrote a letter which is preserved in the Martyrs' Mirror (E 1129- 30), in which he lists some 40 persons who met death in Bern because of their Anabaptist faith. Abraham Lötscher, youngest brother of Hans and Melchior, immigrated to Holland in 1711, where the name soon became Leutscher. A number of his descendants have been Mennonite leaders in that country. The family name takes the form Latscha and Latschar in the Palatinate and in North America. About 1714 Hans Heinrich Lötscher emigrated from the Simmental to Alsace, and later to the Palatinate, Germany, where he settled on Khb”rncheshof near Katzweiler. His children settled in various Palatinate Mennonite communities. One son, Johannes Franz, immigrated to Pennsylvania. The chief homes of the family in North America have been Berks Co., Pa. and Waterloo Co., Ont. Hans 2 Lotscher (Family Name 1 Lötscher) was born 1601 in near Erlenbach, Canton of Bern, Switzerland, and died Abt. 1673. He married Anna Kammer January 21, 1632/33 in Erlenbach, Switzerland, daughter of Marti Kammer and Margret Witwer. She was born in Latterbach, Bern, Switzerland. Notes for Hans Lotscher: Hans Loetschar was an Antibaptist and published a poem called "A new Spiritual Song" which is still kept in the state library in Bern, Switzerland. In 1667, three of the children of Hans and Anna Loetschar (Hans, Melchior and Anna) were imprisoned in Bern because of their Antibaptist beliefs. Hans and Melchior escaped but were recaptured. During his imprisonment, Hans got access to the tower book, a record of all of the Antibaptists who were martyred for their faith in Bern. This list in 1711 was carried by Christian Kroppf from Alsace to Holland. From Holland it was taken to Ephrata in Pennsylvania where the Martyrs Mirror was published containing the letter of Hans Loetschar. Some of his six sons settled in Mehlinger, Germany and Erpotzheim, Germany, and later came to America. His son Frantz came to America on the "Mortonhouse", landing August 23, 1728, at Philadelphia. His son Peter Joseph came to America in 1722 abords the "Marlborough" and settled first in Germantown, later moved to York County, PA. Son Abraham Joseph settled in York Co., PA. [The Mennonites of the Kuhbornscheshof in the Vicinity of Katzweiler] "The Kuhborncheshof (the name of a Hof, or landed estate), on the hill country west of Katzwweiler, is listed as one of the larger Mennonite settlements in the Palatinate. The supposed origine of the estate was under the Crown Elector Karl Philipp through the Elector's court in Heidelberg. On the date of January 19, 1717 the Mennonite Hans Heinrich Lattschar by the 'Kipp Henges Brennen' (by the spring on the Kipp slope) was given a piece of land 220 acres (the acre equivalent of a Morgen is hard to state, for it varies from time to time and place) as an inheritance, for which he was to pay eight measures of rye and seven measures of oats to Martin for the right to the slope on the Lauter (Lauter, in this case refers to the river in the area). 'Kipp Henges Brennen' indicates that there was a spring that belonged to Henchen (Henry) Kipp, and from this old name 'Kuhbornscheshof' came into existence. Hans Heinrich Lattschar, a Mennonite, who fled for his faith out of the Simmenthal (Simmen Valley) in the Canton Bern, Switzerland, by way of the Alsatian cathedral (Masmunster) in 1715 into the Palatinate, originally cultivated the land with his wife and children and built the Hoff, (landed estate). He is the original ancestor of the widely branched Zipp Lattschar (Latschar, Latscha) family, who lived on the estate for 250 years, and still occupys it as well as many other parts of the Palatinate and of the German Confederation. Two sons of the immigrant emigrated to Pennsylvania as early as 1728 and 1741. From there the family spread out, even to Canada. And in later years more families moved to the USA from Kuhborncheshof." A few days before his death he traveled 20 miles to visit sick relatives. He frequently walked 20 to 25 miles a day." Feb. 6, 1787 Germanuner Zeitung Frantz came to America, arriving in Philidelphia from Rotterdam on August 24, 1728 aboard the Mortenhouse after a voyage of 70 days. He was born about 1685 and married Anna Gabel in 1730, had a son Abraham in 1739. Frantz died in Feb 6, 1787 and his will was dated March 8, 1781 and was probated Oct 29, 1795. Very little is known about the first years of Franz Latshaw's life in Pennsylvania, but it appears that he soon settled permanently in what is now Washington township, Berks County - then still a part of Philadelphia County known under the general name of Goshenhoppen. Berks County was organized in 1752 and about the same time the area in question was organized into Hereford township. Later Hereford township was divided and part of it became Washington township. Franz Latshaw acquired a number of tracts of land located in the area now occupied by the town of Bally and the Mennonite meeting house at the west end of Bally is located on part of this land. This church is known as the Hereford Mennonite Meeting house. Franz Latshaw made a will dated March 8, 1781 and it was probated at Reading on Oct. 29, 1795. There is no information about his age in these records, and he was probably buried at Hereford meeting house, but there is no gravestone. The Will of Franz Latshaw: "First, it is my will that all my just debts and funeral expenses shall be paid off and I give, demise and devise unto my son, Abraham Latshaw, of Hereford township, a piece or tract of land situated in Hereford aforesaid, between the land of Frantz Latshaw, Jr., Christopher Schultz, and Philip Christman, being in length 86 perches and in breadth 32 1/2 perches, containing 17 Page 10 and 1/2 acres of land with all the appurtenances, unto the said, my son, Abraham Latshaw, his heirs and assigns forever. Item - I give unto my son John Latshaw, the sum of Fifty pounds of hard money, Pennsylvania currency, and it is my will that all the rest of my personal estate shall be equally divided and shared among my children and step-children, to each and equal share with any other of them, viz: to John, Frantz, Abraham, Jacob, Mary, and Henry Gable, also an equal share to the children of my deceased daughter, Barbara, to be divided in equal portions among them, and also an equal share to the children of my step-daughter, Catharina Lantz, deceased, in equal portions to each of the said two deceased daughter's children when they come to their legal age, and I make and ordain, the said, my son Frantz Latshaw of Hereford township aforesaid, and my step-son Henry Gable of Colebrookdale, aforesaid, to be my executors of this my will. In witness whereof, I, the said Franz Latshaw, have to this my last will and testament, set my hand and seal the day and year above written (March 8, 1781). Frantz (FL) Latshar Signed, seal, declared and delivered by the said Testator as his last will and testament, in the presence of us. Jacob VanReed Christopher Schultz" Source: Floyd's Northumberland County Genealogy Pg 519-520 One Frantz (John Francis) Latshar, a native of Switzerland, came to America on the "Mortonhouse," which qualified at Philadelphia Aug. 24, 1728. On the list of passengers his name is spelled "Frans Latshow." His first settlement in Pennsylvania was near a place called Upland, in Chester county, where he remained a few years, and then went to Oley, Berks county, later settling in the Tulpehocken Valley in the latter county, where he died. He made a permanent home in Colebrookdale township. His last will and testament, made on 1781, was probated Oct. 29, 1795. He was twice married, the first time in Switzerland, and tradition says his first wife died leaving him a number of small children and no one to help in the house. Accordingly he went to Philadelphia (the pioneers were obliged to do in those days for merchandise or help) for a woman to look after his home. and children. He was told of a young woman of good repute whose husband, a Mr. Gabel, had died on the voyage to America, leaving his wife with two small children. At Philadelphia she began a struggling life with her children, finding a place as servant in a Germantown family. Mr. Latshar became acquainted with her, persuaded her to accompany him home as house keeper, and later they were married. Her son Henry Gabel, was taken along with them, and early in life was taken into the Rutter household, the Rutters being the early iron-masters of Colebrookdale, and he fell heir to some of the Rutter money, also being remembered in his stepfather's will. He was a Mennonite, and is buried at Boyertown; his birth occurred in 1734. Frantz Latshar and his second wife had children also. Her maiden name was Sowers, and she was from the Tulpehocken Valley, in Berks county. He left a large estate, which he divided equally among his children, those mentioned in his will, as recorded in Book B, page 398, being John, Frantz, Abraham, Jacob, Mary Lantes (Landis), Henry Gabel (step-son), Rebecca Shelly (deceased, the mother of six children), and Catharine Lantz (stepdaughter), of whom Abraham lived on the Hereford township (Berks county) farm and Frantz elsewhere in the same township. [Latshaw Walt Schoenly.FTW] John Franz Latshar is supposed to be buried in the Hereford Mennonite Church Cemetary. However I was unable to find his grave. A number of graves are marked with sandstone headstones and these are either broke off or completely defaced, making them unreadable. See "Mennonite Church of Boyertown, PA", by Mary Latshaw Bower. Will lists 13 children. Alternate source lists all children except Abraham: "Brethern Heritage Along the Big Conewago" By Elmer Q. Gleim, Vol 1741-1991, Pgs 36, 50-52. In his will, he mentions "my beloved wife Elizabeth Latshaw," " my son Abraham Latshaw," "all my children, namely Solomn Latshaw, Isaac Latsahw, Mary Flanaman, Peter Latshaw, Elizabeth Burkholder, John Latshaw, Sarah Treator, Hannah Burkholder, Eve Wright, Joseph Latshaw, George Latshaw and Catherine Ester." As Abraham wasn't listed with all the other children but was listed separately with an indication that he needed care, he must have been either physically or mentally incapacitated. Executors were John Townsend and Robery Boyd. One such successful farmer was Isaac Latshaw, Sr. (April 20, 1764-June 5, 1833) who purchased a farm along the west banks of the Big Conewago Stream in Reading Township (April 20, 1793). The farm of 140 acres was assessed in 1799 at $1,387.00 for tax purposees. Some old land records show this was "improved property" as early as January 21, 1755. She was born 1734, and died May 1828 in Lycoming twp. N. Umberland Co., PA. Notes for Abraham Latsha: Several sources vary on his birth date, some giving 1729 in York County, PA., others listing May 29, 1741 in Lycoming twp. N. Umberland Co., Pa There are several other puzzels about Abraham and Catherine, and their children 1. Census of 1790 lists Abraham's household with 2 males over 16 and 3 males under 16 (Abraham and 4 sons) and one female (Catherine). And next to him was Jacob Latsha 1 male over 16 - 2 under 16 and 3 females. Close by were John Toner and not too far from there Frederick Row. (These names are spouses of children and grandchildren of Abe Latsha's) The North'd Co census for 1790 was NOT divided by townships - but these listings are no where near the listing of other lower North'd Co relatives, and the rest of the Latsha's. Anyway almost all of Abraham's vast landholdings were in what is now Lycoming County. Lycoming County was formed from Northumberland County in 1795. [Source: Louisa Latsha] 2. He drowned with two of his sons - 1791: From Dunlap's Daily Advertiser - August 17,1791, page 3. " Harrisburg, August 11 On Friday evening the 29th ultimo, Major Abraham Latcha, of Northumberland County, with his two sons and son-in-law, in attempting to cross the west branch of the Susquehanna, with a canoe loaded with stones - the canoe sunk, and Mr Latcha and his two sons were drowned." None of the sons for this family show a death date of 1791. 3. Orphans court April 29, 1794 reveals the names of remaining family: (page 213 )-Jacob Latcha oldest son and heir at law of Abraham Latcha who died intestate leaving a widow who is name Catharina and issue lawful heirs - Jacob the petitioner , John, Andrew, Catharina intermarried with John Carbery, Anna intermarried with William Iddings. Then July 27 1794 page 225 - Jacob the oldest son, John, Andrew, Catharine intermarried with John Carberry, Anna intermarried with William Iddings, AND Martha intermarried with Frederic Row. Now Jacob states that he is the oldest son -and he was born in 1763. 4. Johannas Latsha (usually listed as a son of Abraham) was born in 1752, died in 1810 and has deeds of record in 1996, well after the death of Ahraham and the actions in orphan's court. Heinrich's death is listed as 1823. - the John above, brother to Jacob died in 1802 and Andrew in 1807. It would seem likely at this time that neither of these men are the two drown sons of Abraham Page 15 Latsha. It would seem from the evidence that Johannas Latsha (husband of Susanna Catharina Daniel) and Heinrich (Henry) Latsha should not be attached to this family, but I leave them here for the time being as a place holder for the two missing sons, and to remind us that we need to find the correct connections for these two Latsha men. We also need to address why the husband listed for Catherine in 1791 does not match up with the John Gerberich and children listed for her by so many other sources. Mary Ann Latsha may also be incorrectly attached to this family, or she may have been dead by 1794, and hence not listed. At this time, he owned four cattle, four horses, eight sheep and one still. The Latshaw family purchased a farm which lay close to the Kuhn Fording. The Latshaw family lived in a home in which the first floor was of stone construction and the second floor of logs. ... Isaac and Anna reared their children as farming people. Many of the sons acquired land in Reading, Washington, and Warrington Townships of York, and Adams Counties. [Gettisburg "Compiler", June 11, 1833 obituary) DIED - On Wednesday the 5th inst. after a protracted illness, which he bore with the most christian fortitude and pious resignation to the Devine will, Mr. Isaac Latshaw, of Reading township, in the 70th year of his age. The deceased was a Minister of the Gospel, and a zealous laborer in the vineyard of his Heavenly Father. He has left behind him an aged and disconsolate widow, and a numerous family of children, to mourn the loss of a kind and affectionate husband and father. By his amiable and unassuming deportment, he had endeared himself to all who knew him. Society will long feel the loss it has sustained by the death of one of its most useful and long tried citizens. He has now received the end of all his hopes, the reward of all his toils, and joined in communion with Saints and Angels, in singing praises to the Lamb. S.T.R. However, in reading the will of Dietrich Fahnestock, he lists the names of 10 children, and none are Anna, nor are any married to a Latshaw. The book, "The Fahnestock Genealogy" states that Dietrich and Esther did, indeed, have a daughter named Anna, but she was born born 31 Jul 1765, not 26 Jun 1763, and "must have died young, as she wasn't listed in her father's will." This book goes on to state that Isaac Latshaw's wife was _____ Snyder. Possibly Anna 'Fahnestock' was married first to a Fahnestock and her maiden name was Snyder? Joseph 7 Latshaw (Joseph 6 , Peter Joseph 5 Lattschar, Hans Heinrich 4 Lotschar, Hans 3 Lotscher, Hans 2 , Family Name 1 Lötscher) was born May 20, 1779 in Little York, Pennsylvania, and died September 11, 1845 in Shaker Prairie, Oaktown, Knox Co., Indianna. He married Sarah Porter 1798 in Shippensburg, Franklin Co., Pennsylvania. She was born November 11, 1781, and died December 01, 1863 in Shaker Prairie, Oaktown, Knox Co., IN. Notes for Joseph Latshaw: There is apparently and error in "Brethern Heritage Along the Big Conewago" which associates this Joseph Latshaw with Polly Riddle as his wife. Polly Riddle married Joseph Christopher Latshaw who went to Canada. {Sketch of Joseph Latshow of Sullivan, by Alex Latshaw} He removed from Shippensburg, Pa. to Ohio and settled where the city of Columbus is now. Here he erected a cabin and cleared up a small piece of land according to the conditions of a contract he had made with the owner, who, upon his performing this work and payment of a certain sum, was to make him a deed. When he, Joseph Latshaw, wrote to the owner that he ahad one the worka nd was ready to pay him the money, he was informed the man was dead and that he had minor heirs and that here would be great delay in making a good title to the land he determined to a hand on the place. He then locate near a place called Franklinton near the river Scioto. Here he lived until thesprint of 1814. Hebuilt a boat and putting his family, now consisting of his wife and eight children, toghether with all of his other posessions aboard andin company with John Lowrie and David Porter, his brother inlaw, started on a voyage for Fort Harrison Prairie, now in Vigo County. They arrived at Vincennes safely and without accident in August 1814. He had grown tired of propelling his boat against the current of the mighty Wabash so he sold and bought a waggon and team. He then started from Vincennes by land, Lowrie and Porter still with him, when on the evening of the first day after leaving Vincennes, he was met by a man riding post haste to let the peo;le know that the country north of Busseron Creek was full of Indians and that htey had killed one man and wounded another and had carried away tow boys from Gills Prairie. They were then about there miles southwest of the present village of Carlisle. fortunately they were near a new log house which was covered with clapboards held in place by weight poles. They had spades in the waggon and they immediately went to work and covered the roof with earth which rendered the building almost fireproof. there was a lareg hole under the puncheon floor where the wife and children were put for safety. There was also near by a log stable without any roof. Into this they put the horses, securing the door with a lock and chain. They made a quanty of cartridges so as to expedite reloading. Each of the three men had a good gun and dpening portholes between the logs. the thought they would be able to hold the fort. The timber was cleared away for some distance around the hous and stable and, although the Indians came near as they could tell by the fright of the hourses, the Indians did not venture into the clearing. When morning came the coast seemed to be clear. But still it was not though prudent to continue the journey at that time. While thus waiting, he heard of a tract of land of one hundred acres in the upper end of Shaker Prairie in Sullivan County. He was so well pleased with it that he bought it. He erected a cabin onthis land and sometime in the spring moved onto it. He was appointed a Justice of the Peace by Governor Jennings and was one of the Associate Judges of Sullivan County for a number of years. H always took an active part in politics. His first vote for President was for Thomas Jefferson (1800) and he continued a democrat all his life. Having bought some land in Knox County, he determined in 1834 to build on it and make it his future home. When the people of Sullivan County understood that he was going to move out of the county they resolved, as a mark of their respect and esteem, tochoose him to represent them in the House of representatives in the State Legislature. In the spring of 1835, he moved into his house in the upper end of Knox County. In 1842 his health began to decline from an attack of the Gravel in the Bladder. the disease continued to grow worse and after suffering greatly, he died September 11, 1845.
