He was born on the homestead and received such limited advantages as the subscription schools of his boyhood days afforded. He
was reared to farming, which he followed all his life, beginning on his own account after his marriage, and in 1877 he came to the
place in Washington Township where he resided at the time of his death, owning a highly cultivated tract of sixty-seven acres. He
was an active member of the Reformed congregation of St. Peter's Church, which he served officially as deacon, elder and trustee,
and he and his family donated a memorial window to that church.

He lived near Pump Station, in Jackson Township, Northumberland County. The Latsha homestead is located along the present
State Route 225, about one and one-third miles south of Dornsife. However, the barn is no longer standing. The farm is now (1964)
owned by Rev. Burlington B. Latshaw, Jr., and the old farmhouse is occupied by John T. Schascheck as a tenant. Michael, besides
being a farmer also had a coal yard, and dealt in coal for many years. He also owned and operated the gristmill on the Mahanoy
Creek (called Moxenay Creek by the pioneers), which later for many years was owned and operated by Samuel J. Wilkinson. This
mill is now (1964) owned and operated by Ralph W. Bohner. Michael was also engaged in butchering, and in his various
undertakings proved himself a man of much more than ordinary business ability.

In the Fall of 1846 they moved west and settled in Muscatine, Iowa, where he purchased and took charge of the Iowa House,

He was elected Mayor of Muscatine, Iowa in 1853 and 1857.
