He was born in Baltimore County, Maryland, about March 5, 1761 or 1762. The names of his parents are not given in the application. He moved to that part of North Carolina which later became Sullivan County, Tennessee, near the Virginia line. He enlisted in September, 1776 in Captain William Hicks' North Carolina Company and served as a drummer boy, against the Cherokee Indians. He was discharged in October, 1777. He enlisted in August 1781, serving as a private in Captain Thomas Wallace's Company, Colonel Isaac Shelby's regiment, against the British and Tories and awarding: the frontier against Indians. The length of this tour was three months. In 1817 he moved to Knox County, Tennessee, and in a year moved to Anderson County, Tennessee.
