He was born Dec. 18, 1758, in Georgetown District, South Carolina. He resided in Cheraw, S. C., when he enlisted in hte South Carolina troops as follows: from 1775 or 1776, three months as a private in Capt. Henry Arrington's company, Col. George Hicks' regiment; during the next spring or summer, three months in Capt. Arrington's company, Col. Thomas Loyd's regiment; and for the next summer six months in Capt. Arrington's company under Major Robert Horry and Col Horry. For the spring of 1779 he served six months as orderly sergeant in Capt. Henry Council's company, under Col. Thomas Loyd and Col. Lawrence and he was wounded in the right thigh in the battle of Stono. From March or April, 1780, he was orderly sergeant in Capt. Morris Murphey's company under Maj. Robert Loyd and was in the Siege of Charlestown where he was taken prisoner. He was paroled and was at home until summer when he was called out by Col. Abel Culp against the British Tories. He was out at various times under Col. Culp, Col. Lemuel Benton and was in the battle of Eutaw Springs under Gen. Francis Marion. All of his services from 1775 of 1776 to a date after the battle of Uutaw Springs amounted in all to about three years. He married in 1780 Catherine Smithhart. He died June 11, 1833. She died Sept. 30, 1836. The following children were alive in 1852: Esther Massengale, Catherine Stout, and John L. Goodman, who was then 54 years of age.
