Lowery Date Of Photograph: July 8, 2011 Photo can be seen at: http://www.usgwarchives.net/tn/anderson/photos/tombstones/wilson/lowery808gph.jpg Image file size: 70.0 Kb WH Lowery Born December 25, 1874 Died September 22, 1893 We believe the headstone was made by Aleck Lowery, Will's father. Aleck was a coal miner and used his skill to memorialize his son. Will was 19 years old when he was killed in an accidental shooting. Mrs. Lewellan was aiming at a Mr. Smith who, it is said, had wronged her. The date of the shooting was at the end of the Coal Creek war. Additional Comments: The headstone was found July 8, 2011 by family members who were following a lead resulting from the discovery of a letter written by Nelle Lowery, Will's niece. Nelle states that Will, his father Aleck, his mother Kate and his sister Bessie are all buried in the same area at Wilson Cemetery #1. Details in the letter indicate that Will's grave marker was a piece of slate with his name on it and the other graves are marked with fieldstones. Will's headstone was lying face-down on the ground, covered in vines and in heavy brush when it was found. Its exclusion from the TnGenWeb document for Wison #1 may indicate that it was face-down in the dirt for decades.
