Coats deceased and now owned by the heirs of said Baity Coats Beginning at a hickory south west corner of lot no. 9 running thence south 23 4/10 poles to an elm and red oak thence east 96 poles to an Ironwood hickory and elm. Thence North 28 4/10/ poles to two Elms thence West to the Beginning containing seventeen acres---and take and receive the consideration money or to take notes for the same at their discretion they may also bring suit in my name if necessary to gain possession of or establish my title to the same, employ such counsel or other aid as they may need at my expense and charge and I do hereby ratify and confirm any act or thing they may lawfully do in the premises as fully as if I were present and doing the same myself, this the 7th day of Nov 1838. Rankins of the County and State aforesaid on the other part Witnesseth that the said Charles Coats for and in consideration of the sum of three hundred and fifty dollars to him in hand well and truly paid the sum whereof is hereby acknowledged hath granted, bargained and hold and by these presence doth grant, bargain and sell unto the said Thomas C. Rankins his heirs and assigns a certain lot or parcel of land. Situate lying and being in the county of Bedford the waters of Weakley's Creek beginning at a stake in the big road near the well thence north fifteen poles to a stake thence East 21 3/11 poles to a stake then south fifteen poles to a stake thence west so as to include the old store house and post and railing to the beginning by estimation containing two acres ? I do hereby transfer and convey to said Coats all my right, title claim and interest in and to the ? belonging to the Estate of Wilson Coats which are now in the hands of possession of Celia Coats, also all my interest being a life estate, in a certain lot or parcel of land known in the division of the lands of said Wilson Coats as lot no. 11. To have and to hold to him the said Coats his heirs and assigns forever. McFarling of the County of Bedford and State of Tennessee hath this day sold unto James Coats as the aforesaid county and state a certain Negro girl named Rebecca aged about ten years old for the sum of four hundred and ninety dollars to him in hand paid the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged and do warrant and defend the title of said Negro against the claims of all persons I also warrant said Negro sound and healthy given under my hand and seal this the 11th of September 1841 Signed: W. To all to whom these presents shall come granting know ye that in consideration of military service performed by Edward Dodd to the State of North Carolina Warrant No. 5309 dated the 9th day of December 1797 and entered in the 29th day of March 1809 by No. 1319 there is granted by the said State of Tennessee unto John Coats assignee of Lord Edward Dodd a certain tract or parcel of land containing sixty five acres part of said Warrant lying in Bedford County in the second district on a north branch of Duck river beginning at a White oak and small elm the north west corner of an entry in the name of Benjamin Mebastian for fifty acres of land and the south boundary line of a twenty five hundred acre survey in the name of George Doherty thence west with said Doherty line to the remainder ? one hundred and thirty poles to black oak thence south seventy four poles to a small dogwood thence east one hundred and thirty poles to a pole in said certiony? West boundary of his fifty acres thence north with his west boundary line eighty ? poles to the beginning surveyed ?1809 by ? Book D pages 385 & 386 ---------------------------------------------------------------- Commissioners to John Coates This indenture made this fourteenth day of July the year of our Load one thousand eight hundred and ten between Daniel Mekesuk, Benjamin Beadford, Bertetey Starton, John Atkenson, Howel Dowdy, John Lane & William Woods commissioners for fixing the seat of justice in Bedford County and selling to town lots of the County town of Bedford County and State of Tennessee of the one part and John Coates of the County of Bedford and state of aforesaid of the other part Witnesseth that the said Commissioners aforsaid in consideration of the sum of forty five dollars to them in hand paid by the said John Coats the acceptance whereof is hereby acknowledged hath given granted bargained sold alined conveyed and confirmed into the said John Coates his heirs and assigns forever a certain tract or parcel of land situate lying and being in the County of Bedford and known by no twenty in the plan of a town laid off by the said commissioners and called for and distinguished by the name of Shelbyville agreeable to an act of assembly entitled an act to reduce the limits of Bedford County and to establish its permanent boundary passed November the fourteenth one thousand eight hundred and nine to have and to hold the aforesaid land, with all and singular the rights emoluments appurtances of in and to the same belonging ???? to the only person ????Ever of heirs the said John Coates his heirs and assigns forever and the said commissioners doth covenant assign to and with the said John Coates his heirs and assigns that the before recited land and bargained premises they will warrant and forever defend as commissioners against the right title interest or claim of every person or persons whatsoever In Witness whereof the said commissioners hath hereunto severally set their hands and affixed their seals the date above written. Kesick M Mitchell Clerk's certification September Term 1813 Book D pages 414 & 415 ------------------------------------------------------------- Samuel Sebaston to John Coats This indenture made this 3rd day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirteen between Samuel Sebaston of the State of TN and County of Bedford of the one part and John Coats of the County and state of aforesaid of the other part Witnesseth that for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred and fifty dollars to me in hand paid the accept whereof is hereby acknowledged hath bargained sold and confirmed unto the said John Coats, a certain tract or parcel of land containing fifty acres lying and being in the county of Bedford and state aforesaid on the north side of Duck river ? and bounded as follows beginning at a dogwood ash and two elms in the south boundary line of a 2500 acre survey in the name of George Doherty and the north west corner of a hundred acre entry in the name of Thomas Thompson of which tract it is apart of running thence south eighty nine and five tenths poles to a bed oak and ash thence east eight five and six tenths poles to three hickories thence north ninety seven poles to a dogwood and two hickories in the south boundary line of said Doherty survey thence west with said line to the beginning to have and to hold the said land with all and singular the appurtenance ? belonging to him and his heirs forever and by these presents do warrant one forever defend the right and title from all known of persons whatsoever claiming under or through me, In Witness whereof I have here unto set my name and affixed my seal this day and date above written. Witnesseth that for and in consideration of the sum of thirteen hundred & eighty dollars t me in hand paid the weight whereof I do hereby acknowledge hath given granted bargained sold and do give grant ? assign & confirm unto him the said Wilson Coates his heirs and assigns forever one certain tract or parcel of land situate lying & being in the County of Bedford of State aforesaid and on the north side of Duck River beginning at a Lynn & two and are where Waller Lins West boundary line ? the North Bank of Duck River ? at the instance of M MC Kinney by Maleon Getetres Running from thence North with said line three hundred & twenty one poles to a hickory ironwood of white oak in the North boundary line of R W Smith 5000 acre tract thence west two hundred and nine and 2/3 of a pole to a stake thence south one hundred and twenty four poles to a stake thence east 2/3 of a pole to and Elm Hickory and ? Oak thence South two hundred twenty two poles to a Poplar Ironwood and White Oak on the North side of the New Road leading from Shelbyville to Winsteston thence with the said road south 49 and twelve poles to a black gum and poplar thence south 50 ? nineteen poles to a white oak thence south 59 East fifty six poles to a white oak thence south 8 1/2 east thirty three poles to a ? beam and sycamore and Lym on the bank of Duck River thence with the various meandering up to the beginning containing by estimation six hundred and fifty acres in to have and to hold the said tract or parcel of land with all and singular the heritaments and appurtenances to the same belonging on in any wise appertaining to him the said Wilson Coats his heirs and assigns forever and against the legal title interest or claim of him the said Clement Cannon his heirs or assigns on the claim of all and every other person or persons whatever lawfully claiming the same and I the said Clement Cannon for myself my heirs executing and ? doth and will forever warrant and defend the above. To have and to hold the aforesaid land and bargained premises unto him the said Wilson Coats his heirs executors administrators and assigns forever with all and singular an the appurtenance thereunto belonging or in any wise appertaining to he only proper use and behalf of him said Coats and in the said William Gore from myself my laws executors and administrators doth covenant and agree to warrant and forever defend the above granted and bargained premises unto him the said Wilson Coats his heirs executors and administers forever. Hevely for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred and seventy five dollars to him in hand paid by the said Wilson Coats the acceptance whereof is hereby acknowledged hath given granted bargained unto and conveyed unto the said Wilson Coats his heirs and assigns a certain tract of land situate lying and being in the county and state as above named and distinquished in the plan of the town of Shelbyville by lot no 65 to have and to hold the aforesaid land with all and singular the rights property emoluments & appurtenance of in and to the same or in any wise appertaining to the only proper use and behalf of him the said Wilson Coats his heirs and assigns for ever and the said Geo W. Witnesseth that the said William Coats for and in consideration of the sum of seven hundred and fifty dollars to him in hand paid by the said Thomas Blythe Junr the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged hath given granted bargained sold aligned conveyed and confirmed unto the said Thomas Blythe his heirs and assigns forever a certain tract or parcel of Land situate lying & being in the County of Bedford near the town of Shelbyville in said county being part of a tract of land purchased by Wilson Coats deceased from Clement Cannon and bounded as follows to the beginning at a stake dogwood hornbeam and pin oak marked for pointing in the west boundary line of said Wilson Coats' tract before mentioned on hundred and four poles south of his north west corner running thence east one hundred and twenty six poles to a pin oak thence south ninety five and four tenths of a poles to an oak and hickory thence west one hundred and twenty four poles to two dogwoods in said Wilson Coats' West boundary line thence with his line north 75 and 4/10 of a pole to Wilson Coats' corner thence west six tenth of a pole to a stake thence with his to north twenty poles to the beginning containing estimation seventy five acres..... To have and to hold the aforesaid land with all and singular the rights proper emoluments hereditaments and appurtenance of in and to the same belonging or in any were appertaining to the only proper use and behalf of him the said Thomas Blythe his heirs and assigns forever and the said William Coats for himself his heirs executors and administrators doth covenant and agree to and with the said Thomas Blythe his heirs and assigns that the before recited land and bargained premises he will warrant and forever defend against the right title interest or claim of all and every person or persons whatever . Hwely (seal) Signed sealed and delivered in our presents, William Gore, Elam Henderson Clerks certification October term 1819 Book L pages 416-417 ---------------------------------------------------------- Wilson Coats to Edward Wade This indenture made this thirteenth day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty between Wilson Coats of Bedford County and State of Tennessee on the one part and Edward Wade of the county aforesaid and state aforesaid on the other part Witnesseth that the said Wilson Coats for and in consideration of the sum of thirty dollars to him in hand paid by the said Edward Wade the acceptance whereof is hereby acknowledged hath given granted bargained sold alined conveyed and confirmed unto the said Edward Wade his heirs assigns forever a certain tract or parcel of land situate lying and being in the county of Bedford and on the north side of Duck River Beginning at an ash and larkberry on the bank of Duck River running thence north fifty three and a half degrees west nine poles thence north thereby six and a half east twenty six and a third poles thence south fifty three and a half degrees east nine poles thence south thirty six and a half degrees west to the beginning containing one acre and eighty poles it be a part of a survey which Wilson Coats now lives it being a certain piece of land said Coats sold to James Sharp to have and to hold the aforesaid land with all singular the right property emoluments hereditaments and appurtenances of in and to the same belonging or in any were appertaining to the only proper use and behalf of him the said Edward Wade his heirs and assigns forever and the said Wilson Coats for his heirs executor and admin do covenant and agree to and with the said Edward Wade his heirs and assigns that the before recited land and bargained premises he will warrant and forever defend against the right title interest on claim of all and every person or persons whatsoever in witness whereof the said Wilson Coats hath hereunto set his hand and affixed his seal the day and year above written Signed Wilson Coats, his mark (seal) Ack Signed sealed and delivered in the presents of Jn Allary Wm Gore Clerks certification July Term 1820 Book M pages 297-298 ---------------------------------------------------------- Several to Wilson Coats This indenture made and entered into this tenth day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty one between John " Howel Dawdy and John Lane of the County of Bedford and State of TN commissioners approved by the last call session of the general assmebly made and provided for the surveying commission to make deed and vest title to all those who have not received title for their towns proper in the town of Shelbyville and for the further ? the same of the one part and Wilson Coats of the County and State aforesaid of the other part Witnesseth that the said commission for and in condieration of the sum of ten dollars to then in hand paid the right whereof is hereby acknowledged hath gratned bargained sold alined coneyed and confirmed unto the said Wilson Coats his heirs and assigns forever a certain tract or parcel of land situate lying and being in the town of Shelbyville and county aforsaid and known and distinguished in the plan of said town by no. one hundrend and twnety seven No. 127.... Jn Akinson (seal) Howel Dawdy (seal) Signed sealed and delivered in presents of Edw Wade and George Hevely Clerk certification July term 1822 Book P pages 103 & 104 ---------------------------------------------------------- Benjamin Coats Power of Attorney This indenture made this fourth day of January 1830 between James Coats agent for Benjamin Coats of the County of Bedford and State of Tennessee of the one part and Henry Tendle of the County of Bedford State of Tennessee of the other part Witnesseth that the said James Coats for and in consideration of one hundred and sixty dollars him in hand paid the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged and hath bargained and sold and by these presents hath conveyed and confirmed to the said Henry Tendle his heirs and assigns forever a certain tract of land situate in the County of Bedford bounded as follows beginning at an elm the north east corner of a tract of land belonging to the heirs of Henry Toabenser deceased running thence east sixty two and a half poles to Duck River thence down the north side of the D.R. twenty five poles to an elm thence north one hundrend and twenty two poles to the beginning comes said tract beginning a part of Wilson Coats tract ? and was laid off on the south east corner of said tract lot no.1 containing forty acres which tract of land together with the herediments and appurtenances thereto belonging the said James Coats and Benjamin his brother for themselves their heirs and to the said Henry Tindle his heirs and assigns will warrant and forever defend against the lawful claim of any person or persons by these present and indefensible inheritance in fee simple. Powell have entered into agreed to bargain and assigned this as a Quit Claim deed and transferred of a title of mortgage aforesaid and made to me of the matter aforesaid by ? ? H. Sovel and by this presence do set over transfer and delivered to the said Coats all my title claim interest and right for and in ????of the ? Six hundred dollars from him by the said Coats and for which Quite Claim I had myself my heirs and assigns to warrant and defend the same to the said Coats. Polk of the County of Rowan and State of North Carolina of the one part and Peyton C. Coats of the County of Bedford and State of Tennessee of the other part Witnesseth that said Thomas G. Polk for and in consideration of the sum of eight hundred and twenty dollars to him in hand paid by the said Coats the acceptance thereof is hereby acknowledged hath granted bargained sold and conveyed and by these presents doth grant bargain sell and convey unto the said Coats his heirs and assigns for the sum aforesaid on the waters of Henricono creek being part of a 1940 acre survey d eeded by William Polk to said Thomas G. Polk and grounded as follows to wit beginning on the walnut end white oak in the north boundary line of said 1940 acre survey sold to Sam'l Britain thence south 178 poles to a walnut and red and of ? poles to an Elm and Walnut in the west boundary of said 1940 acre survey thence with the said western boundary 180 poles to a stake the north west corner of said 1940 acre survey thence with the northern boundary line of said 1940 acre survey to the beginning containing by estimation two hundred and thirty four acres and three quarters be the same more or less to have and to hold said tract of land with the appurtenances to him the said Coats his heirs and assigns forever and the said Polk for himself his heirs executors and administrators alone as the warranty and defend the tittle of said land to him the This is also an incomplete copy...and ends here Deed Book "EE" page 360 ---------------------------------------------------------- James Coates to Joseph Marlow This indenture made this 18th day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seventy nine between James Coates of Bedford County and State of Tennessee on the one part and Joseph Marlow of the County of Bedford and State of Tennessee on the other part ? that the said James Coates for and in consideration of the sum of twenty five dollars to me in hand paid by the said Joseph Marlow the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged ? given granted bargained sold alined conveyed and confirmed unto the said Joseph Marlow his heirs and assign forever a certain tract or parcel of land situate lying and being in the county of Bedford and state of Tennessee in the town of Shelbyville north of the Jaile lot and next to the lot that Joseph Marlow purchased of Alexander Yell between Martin and Water or Spring Street known and distinguished in the plan of said town by no sixty five East half of the same purchased of George W.
