Patton & Erwin to Shrewsbury Payne, Bedford Co., TN, 10
April 1812

(Transcriber's note: The clerk began recording this deed from James Patton & 
Andrew Erwin to Shrewsbury Payne on page 230 of Vol. D, but stopped after 20 
lines and crossed out the entry with a large "X." Since the last word he wrote 
on that page was erroneous, I suppose that's why he stopped. On pages 233-234, 
he entered the complete deed. In both entries the first name of Shrewsbury 
Payne (or, often, Shrewsberry Payne) was spelled without the first "r" in 
every instance. The certification at the bottom of page 234 was crowded 
together with the witnesses' and grantors' signatures, and I have tried to 
reproduce that. The first witness's name was H. Grove, based on other deeds 
I've seen, but was rendered by the clerk as the initials, H.G., followed by 
what might be "Rove." Notice the different spellings of Andrew Erwin's last 
name, even though the clerk was copying from the same deed each time--all good 
illustrations of why it is not safe to assume the recorded spelling of a name 
is necessarily the correct spelling.]

This Indenture made this tenth day of
April in the Year of our Lord one Thousand Eight hundred
and Twelve Between James Patton & Andrew Erwin of the
County of Buncombe & State of North Carolina of the one
part & Shewsberry Payne of the County of Bedford &
State of Tennessee of the other part Witness, that
for & in Consideration of the sum of Seven hundred
& twenty three Dollars to us in hand paid by the said
Shewsberry Payne the receipt whareof is hereby acknowledged
Hath Granted Bargained sold allien Conveyed & Confirmed
and do by these presents Grant Bargain Sell allien
Convey and Confirm unto the said Shewsberry Payne
his heirs & assigns forever a Certain Tract or Parcel
of Land Situate lying and being in the County of
Bedford and on the South or Barran fork of Duck
River Beginning at Wren Carters South East Corner
on two Sycamores on the north bank of the South fork
of Duck river in the Eastern boundary line of Grant
No 223 Thence Crossing the river South Two hundred
poles to a Sugartree in J Ewells line thence Crossing
