Since the last word he wrote on that page was erroneous, I suppose that's why he stopped. On pages 233-234, he entered the complete deed. In both entries the first name of Shrewsbury Payne (or, often, Shrewsberry Payne) was spelled without the first "r" in every instance. The certification at the bottom of page 234 was crowded together with the witnesses' and grantors' signatures, and I have tried to reproduce that. The first witness's name was H. Grove, based on other deeds I've seen, but was rendered by the clerk as the initials, H.G., followed by what might be "Rove." Notice the different spellings of Andrew Erwin's last name, even though the clerk was copying from the same deed each time--all good illustrations of why it is not safe to assume the recorded spelling of a name is necessarily the correct spelling.] Bedford Co., TN, deed book D, pg. 230: Patton & Erwin Deed to S Payne for 122 acres (230 This Indenture made this tenth day of April in the Year of our Lord one Thousand Eight hundred and Twelve Between James Patton & Andrew Erwin of the County of Buncombe & State of North Carolina of the one part & Shewsberry Payne of the County of Bedford & State of Tennessee of the other part Witness, that for & in Consideration of the sum of Seven hundred & twenty three Dollars to us in hand paid by the said Shewsberry Payne the receipt whareof is hereby acknowledged Hath Granted Bargained sold allien Conveyed & Confirmed and do by these presents Grant Bargain Sell allien Convey and Confirm unto the said Shewsberry Payne his heirs & assigns forever a Certain Tract or Parcel of Land Situate lying and being in the County of Bedford and on the South or Barran fork of Duck River Beginning at Wren Carters South East Corner on two Sycamores on the north bank of the South fork of Duck river in the Eastern boundary line of Grant No 223 Thence Crossing the river South Two hundred poles to a Sugartree in J Ewells line thence Crossing [The entry ends here.] Bedford Co., TN, deed book D, pp. 233-234: 233) Patton & Erwin Deed to Shewsberry Payne 122 This Indenture made this Tenth day of April in the Year of our Lord one thousand Eight hundred and twelve Between James Patton & Andrew Irvin of the County of Buncombe & State of North Carolina of the one part and Shewsberry Payne of the County of Bedford & State of Tennessee of the other part Witnesseth that for & in consideration of the Sum of Seven Hundred and Twenty three Dollars to us in hand paid by the said Shewsberry Payne the receipt whareof is hereby acknowledged Hath Granted Bargained Sold aliened Conveyed & Confirmed & do by these presents Grant Bargain Sold alliened Conveyed and Confirmed unto the said Shewsberry Payne his heirs and assigns for ever a Certain Tract or Parcel of Land Situate lying and being in the County of Bedford and on the South or Barran fork of Duck River Beginning at Wren Carters South East Corner on two Sycamore the north bank of the South fork of Duck river in the Eastern Boundary line of Grant No 223 thence Crossing The river South Two hundred poles to a Sugartree in J Ewells line Thence west fifty Six poles to Two Cedars and Sugartree Z Paynes Corner thence North thirty degrees west one Hundred & Thirty poles To the middle of the river Thence up river with The meanders thereof North Sixty degrees East Thirty Six poles Thence North Thirty degrees [--pg. 234--] West one Hundred & two poles to a beach & Ironwood in Wren Carters line Thence East with his line one Hundred and Thirty two poles to the Beginning Containing one Hundred and Twenty two Acres be the Same More or less To Have And to Hold The aforesaid Tract of Land together with all & Singular The rights profits Emoluments Hereditaments & appurtenances of in & to the Same belonging or in any wise appertain- ing to the only proper use & behoof of him the said Shewsberry Payne his heirs & assigns for ever & we the Said James Patton & Andrew Erwin for ourselves our heirs Executors administrators & assigns do Covenant & agree To & with the Said Shewsberry Payne his heirs & assigns That the before recited Land & Bargained premises We will Warrant & forever defend against the right Title Claim Interest or demand of all & every person or Manner of persons whatever In Witness whareof we the Said James Patton & Andrew Erwin have hereunto Set Our hand & affixed our Seals the day & year first above Written Signed Sealed & Delivered in presents of .......................................(Andrew Erwin for (seal) H.G.
