He was born February 14, 1750, in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. From about 1722 he lived in Mecklenburg, North Carolina, where he enlisted about June 1, 1780, in Captain John Brumfield's company, Colonel Robert Erwin's regiment. He was in the battle of Hanging Rock and in an engagement next day at Flat Rock. Later he served in Captain Porter's company of the same regiment He next joined Colonel Davie's regiment, of mounted gunmen. About 1791 he moved to the Tennessee country to what is now Davidson County. Six years later he moved to Williamson County and about 1831 he was living in Bedford County, Tennessee. He is referred to in the record as Robert Caruthers. senior. A James Caruthers living in Nashville, Tennessee, is mentioned in 1837 without indicaton of relationship. The soldier's signature was Robert Carothers but he was pensioned as Robert Caruthers and he is the only Robert Caruthers in the revolutionary war records.
