He was, therefore, born in 1755. He stated that his home was in the shadow of King's Mountain but that he was not in that battle owing to a thigh wound accidently received from a spear in the hands of a comrad. He was in the battle of Ramsour's Mill He served in Captain Barber's company, Colonel McDowell's regiment. He married Mary McCleary, daughter of Robert and Abigail McCleary of Mechlenburg, North Carolina. She survived him and drew a pension. She stated that they were married May 28, 1783, in her father's home. Their children were: Abigail, born 1790; Robert, born 1793; Clarissa, born 1796; Marilla, born 1799; Polly McDowell, born 1806; and Matilda born 1808.
