Tenn., September 19, 1828. He was the son of John Medearis and Rachel Davis Medearis. He was born in Essex County, Virginia, "between "Rappahannock and Dragon." He entered the service in 1776 and was a captain in North Carolina troops until November 1, 1778, when he was appointed Assistant Deputy Quartermaster General. He continued in service until August 1, 1783. John Medearis married December 20, 1870, Sarah, the widow of Thomas Bell. John Medearis died March 21 or 31, 1834. His wife had predeceased him but date and place of death are not given in the pension papers. The following data regarding the children of John Medearis are given: Washington Davis Medearis, born 1783, married Elizabeth S. Woodward; Benjamin Medearis, no data; B. W. H. Medearis, no data; Polly Medearis Smith was the only surviving child in 1854. The names of several grandchildren appear.
