He was born August 4, 1836. He enlisted in the 1st Regiment North Carolina Troops and served three years under Capt. Henry Dixon; he served one year under Capt. James Reid and served the balance of his seven years' service under Capt. Peter Becoff (?). He served seven years lacking two months when he was honorably discharged. He moved in 1825 to Davidson County and was transferred to that point. His widow, Mary Etheridge was aged 83 years April 3, 1843, when she applied for pension in Davidson County. She was born, 1860. [sic] She says that she was married to John Etheridge, March 7, 1780, in Halifax County, N. C., at the house of Col. Bradford, who was a justice of the peace. John Etheridge was then in service and received permission from his captain to stay at home for ten days after his marriage. He was taken prisoner at Charleston and was wounded twice during the War, once in the arm and once above the right eye. He died Dec., 12, 1839.
