He enlisted at Carlisle, Pennsylvania, in the spring of 1776 or 1777 for three years under Captain William Wyley and Colonel Benjamin Flowers and served until 1780, when he was discharged at the Barracks near Carlisle, Pennsylvania, by Captain John Jordan by orders of General Irvine. He was in the battle of Paoli. In 1782 he enlisted for "during the War" at Reading, Pennsylvania, and served under Captain Andrew Walker and Colonel Richard Butler in the 3rd Pennsylvania Continental regiment. He was appointed sergeant and served under Captain Christie in the same regiment. He was discharged at Carlisle, September 30, 1783. Diana Kilbourne, aged 78, applied for widow's pension October 3, 1842. She resided in Blount County. She declared that she married Benjamin Kilbourn in 1781 or 1782 in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, and that her name before marriage was Diana Denning; that they moved to Blount County, Tennessee, in 1802 and that her husband died there in June 1828. They had five daughters and two sons. Three daughters and two of the sons were married and the youngest daughter was 15 in 1842. One of the said sons had been six years in the United States Army. In 1842 one daughter, Elizabeth, was aged 61 and the widow of Robert Hooke, aged about 71.
