His name is shown in the application papers as Leay, Lee and Lea. He came from Ireland to America when he was about thirteen years of age. He was living in Rockbridge County, Virginia, when he entered the service. In the fall of 1775 he volunteered in Captain John Hay's company, Colonel George Matthews' 9th Virginia regiment and was in the battles of Princeton, Germantown, White Marsh, Stillwater, and at the surrender of Burgoyne; he was discharged from service at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, having served two and one half years. He returned to Virginia. He had previously served in the battle of Point Pleasant. He resided in Virginia about thirty years. He moved to North Carolina and later moved to Blount County Tennessee, a short time before 1819. He gave his age at that time as between sixty and seventy years. He stated that he had a family but gave no names. In July 1821 he had no family living at home and was himself living with a Mr. Bogle.
