He was accidentally thrown from a horse and sank rapidly, dying from his injuries. Mr. Wood was born in Randolph County, North Carolina, July 25, 1813, but his parents removed to Washington County, Tenn. when he was still a boy. His parents, John and Lucretia Wood, were honest, industrious citizens and members of one of the early and prominent families of Randolph County where his grandfather, Zebedee Wood, Esq., distinguished himself in public life. When a young man, he was married December 29, 1831 in Washington County to Miss Margrett McCracken and reared a large family. He removed to Bradley County and here made his home until 1870, when he removed to Kansas and resided there for about one year before removing to Ozark County, Mo. Upon his arrival there, he located upon a farm about four miles west of Gainesville, where he made his home until his death. He was a Republican politically, was a strong Union man during the war, and was a farmer, mill wright, and carpenter by occupation. He held the office of justice of the peace after settling in Ozark County, and was long and prominently connected with the Methodist Episcopal Church. He possessed many noble qualities of mind and heart, and although nearing 80 he seemed to fall well before his time. He was a highly respected and honorable citizen, a kind father and a good husband, and will be missed by all.
