He was born in Maryland, July, 1762. When he was eight years old he moved with his parents to Loudoun County, Va., and at the age of fifteen moved to Augusta County, Va., where he was living when he enlisted in 1777 or 1778 under Col. Robert Craven. He enlisted again and moved to Botetourt County where he enlisted again. He moved to Greenbriar County, Va., and thence to Powell's Valley, now Tennessee. He settled in Anderson County about the year 1812. In 1837 he was transferred to Indiana as he moved to that state.
