Tutt John Reed was listed as 70 years old at this time and he entered the service as ______ Co. SC. East Tennessee: John Read (Reed) of Campbell in the State of Tennessee who was a private in the _______ Commanded by Captain Maxwell of the Reg. E commanded by _______ Andreson In the ______ line for 1 year ___ of Cavalry: 6 Mon ___ of Infantry. Inscribed on the Roll of East Tennessee at the rate of 70 dollars -- cents per annum, to commence on the 4th day of March 1834. Certificate of Pension issued the 8th day of Jan 18 __ Jacksboro. Arrears to the 4th of Sept $175 Semi-ann allowance ending 4 March 35 ____ $210 State of Tennessee - Campbell County - On the 10th day of September 1832 personally appeared in this County having a court of Pleas and quarter sesions for Campbell County now ___ John Read a resident of the County and State aforesaid aged, Seventy years, who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress ___ June 7th 1832 that he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers, as a volunteer, and served as herein states first engagement a volunteer to guard the bank of the Savanah River under General Andrew Pickins regiment Robert Anderson, Col. Benjomin Tutt, ___ Capt. David Maxwell, John Cane or Cain First Lt. Gabrial Tutt ensign May 1781 and continued doing service until 1782 in ___ when he was drafted for three months for which service he got a discharge but has lost it. September 1782 volunteered for nine months as a ranger under Capt. Michael Watson, Emer (?) Tutt First Lt. ___ Watson ____ and served the time and got a discharge but has lost it. Residency when he went into the service was the County of Edgefield, State of South Carolina. 1st marched to the banks of the Savanah opposite Augusta, 2nd Marched through the lower country of South Carolina was stationed near _____ on the Ashley River near Bacons Bridge. 3rd ____ ranged from Edgefield as low as Orangeburgh. 2nd trip stationed near the lines of Gen. Marion, Sumpter and Lee. He has no documentary evidence of what he knows of no person whose testmony ________ who can testify to his service. He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and declares that his name is not on the Pension Roll of the agency of any State ..... John Read (X his mark) We, Joseph Hart and Joseph Peterson residency in the County of Campbell and State of Tennessee hereby certify that we are well acquainted with John Reed who has subscribed and sworn to the above declaration that we believe him to be seventy years of age, that he is ____ and believed in the neighborhood where he resides to have been a soldier of the revolution and that we concur in that ... State of Tennessee - Morgan County, on the 1st Day of June 1839 personally appeared before me ____ ____ a Justice of the Peace in and for the County aforesaid Nancy Reed, a resident citizen of Campbell County Tennessee aged seventy four years who being first duly sworn according to law .... Declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the pension made by act of congress passed the 7th July 1838 .... half pay and pensions to certain widows - that she is the widow of John reed who was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and a Revolutionary pensioner at the rate of about seventy dollars per anum. She further declares that she was married to the said John reed in Green County in the State of South Carolina on the __ day of September 1783 and that her said husband the aforesaid John Reed died on the 9th day of December 1838 in Morgan County Tennessee his residence being in Campbell County Tennessee. That she was not married to him prior to his leaving the service but the marriage took place ____ of February 1794 at the time above stated. she further states that she has no written or documentation ____ said marriage but thinks she can prove this marriage by Phebe Laymance of Morgan County Tennessee. That her maiden name was Nancy Morris, that she was married by John Shastein a Baptist preacher married by publication of bans. She further states that her son Isaac Reed her oldest child was born March the 31st day in the year 1790 about 7 years after her marriage, her daughter Sarah Reed born January the 21st 1793 her son Allen Reed born June the ___ 1796, Rebecca Reed born February the 7th 1805. She further states that she has the records of her childrens ages. She states that the ages of her first children was set down by her husband John reed as well as she now recollects and the age of their youngest was set down by John Bake. She further states that the reason of her making her declaration in Morgan County is because it is most convenient .... Nancy Reed (X her mark) State of Tennessee, Morgan County - on this the 3rd day of June 1839 Personally appeared .... Phebe Laymance, aged sixty two years, with whom I am personally acquainted, her statements being entitled to ____ credit and of her being duly sworn for that purpose on her oath states that she recollects that Nancy Reed and John Reed were married at the house of John Shasteen in Greenville County South Carolina she witness being young at that time and being at the house of said Shastein that married her sister saids marriage took place a great many years past she thinks from her best calculations to have been in the time of her being very young she thinks perhaps about seven years old as near as she can guess .... Phebe Laymance (X her mark) Nancy Reed also appeared in 20th July 1855 in order to obtain Bounty land under the act approved March 3, 1855. She stated she was about 92 at the time. William Buttram and Allan Reed, residents of Scott County TN were her witnesses. Taken from South Carolina Roster: Reed, John, d. 9 December 1838; m. Nancy Morris, September 1783. He enlisted, while residing in Edgefield District, under Lt. John Cain, Capt. David Maxwell, Maj. Benjamin Tutt, Col. Anderson, and Gen. Pickens. Next, he was under Ensign Gabriel Tutt and Col. Purvis and was at the siege of Ninety Six. In 1782, he was under Lt. James Tutt and Capt. Michael Watson. In October 1783, he was again under Maj. Tutt and Col. Anderson. He was in the battle of Chota against the Indians. (Moved to Tenn) John died on Reed land, now New River, Scott Co. TN and is buried at Brimstone Creek, Morgan Co. TN, along with Nancy (Morris) Reed.
