                 Will of John Reed March 1838,  

Record in Jacksboro, county of Campbell Co., TN. It was attested to by Allen
McDonald, James Cecil (who married John's first granddaughter), and John 
Phillips.
The will reads as follows: 

I, John Reed, do make and publish this my last will and testament hereby 
revoking and making void all other wills by me at any time made.  

First: I direct that my funeral expenses and all my debts be paid as soon 
after my death as possible out of any monies that i may die possessed of or 
may first come into the hands of my executors. Secondly: I give and bequeath 
to my wife Nancy Reed all my estate both real and personal during her natural 
life in manner following that is to say I wish my executors hereafter named to 
take the properties of all my land and rent out the same annually and apply 
the rents and profits thereof to the support and comfort of my said wife 
Nancy, which together with the personal estate is intended for her support 
during her natural life.  

Thirdly: I wish my granddaughter Patsy [Martha] Chitwood to have one feather 
bed and furniture and a cow and calf to be given to her by my executors so 
soon as she may marry providing that event may not happen until after my 
death. 

Fourthly: after the death of my aforesaid wife Nancy, I give and bequeath to 
my two sons namely, Isaac Reed and Allen Reed, all my personal estate to be 
equally divided between my two sons aforesaid in manner following, that is to 
say, the branch above the barn field which heads up in the ridge and empties 
into New River a small distance above the ford shall be the dividing line, 
Isaac is to have the upper part of the tract adjoining his land and Allen Reed 
is to have the lower part adjoining his land. 

Lastly: I do hereby nominate and appoint David Richardson and Isaac Reed my
executors not requiring them to give any security for the true performance of 
the duties enjoined on them by my will. 

In testimony whereof I do to this my will, set my hand and seal this 23rd day 
of March, 1838.

About nine months after making his will, age 76, John Reed died, 12-09-1838. 
He died in Morgan County, most likely at the home of his son Allen, which was 
only about three miles away from John's own Campbell County residence, but on 
the opposite side of the New River
