Roulstone Vol E, Pg 451 Grantee: Edward Gwin Date: 6 Jan 1840 I James G. Roulstone have this day bargained and sold and do hereby bargain sell and convey unto Edward Gwin for the sum of one dollar to me in hand paid and the other consideration herein after mentioned the following slaves, (to wit) One negro Boy Agnt about twenty two years old a negro girl agness about thirteen years old a negro girl Beck about nine years old and a negro woman Edy about forty five years old to have and to hold the same to the said Edward Gwin that I am lawfully seized of Said negroes & have a good right to convey them. I do further covenant and bind myself my heirs and representatives to warrant and forever defend the title to the said negroes all and each of them to the said Edward Gwin his heirs and assigns against the lawful claim of all persons whatsoever But this deed is made for the following uses and trust and forms other purpose that is to say that S. C. Pavatt, Joel D. Everett and John Norman have extended for me a Bill of Exchange for six hundred dollars made upon Felts and Lansdale of New Orleans dated third day of January 1843 and due ninety days after date which Bill has been sold to the Branch of the Bank of Tennessee at Trenton and whereas I am indebted to John Dickson is the sum of Seven hundred and fifty dollars due by a note due the first day of January 1843 and due by note for six hundred dollars due first day of January 1844. Now if I should faithfully meet and pay the above described Bill of Exchange on or before the third day of April, 1843 and if I should pay the above described two notes for seven hundred and fifty dollars due to John Dickson by the first day of January 1844 then this Bill of Sale to be void but if I should not then the said Edward Gwin as trustee after giving twenty days notice in writing at the Court house in Huntingdon, Tennessee and at three other publick places in Carroll County may sell the above described negro slaves to the highest bidder for cash and appropriate the proceeds first to the payment of cost and necessary expenses and second to the satisfaction of the above described Bill of Exchange and notes and the balance if there be any pay to one.
