Bell enlisted in the 2nd West Tennessee Cavalry on 5 August 1862 at Trenton. This unit was later designated 7th Tennessee Cavalry, 2nd Regiment, Company G, United States Army. Corporal Bell was captured by Confederate forces under the command of General Nathan Bedford Forest along with other members of his unit on 10 June 1863 during a skirmish near Ripley, Tennessee. He became a prisoner of war at the Confederate prison known as Libby in Richmond, Virginia. Enlisted prisoners were placed on the Belle Island section of the prison and had little or no protection from the elements or little food. Corp. Bell died on 24 December 1863 at the age of 37 in the Confederate prison hospital. He was buried in Oakwood Cemetery,at Richmond. He was moved to the National Cemetery at Richmond after the end of the war. His grave is in Section 8A, grave marker 1577.
