This was for 3 months. Was stationed at Cross Creek, NC, now the town of Fayetteville. He was under Capt. Bullock and Col. ?Fulsom’s regiment. In this tour he was in no engagement, but scouted among the Tories.” “Then in the year 1778, he can’t recollect what month, he volunteered for a tour of 6 months under Captain Joseph Young, Colonel Yancy’s [or Lytle’s] regiment, all commanded by General Ashe. These troops were raised in Orange and the adjoining County in NC. They were then marched to the neighborhood of Charleston, SC, and then joined General Ashe on the Savannah River and crossed over with him in the state of Georgia where Ashe was defeated on Briar Creek. The next day they recrossed the river and fell under General Rutherford, (as their General Ashe, as he understood, was arrested) and was discharged at Turkey Hill on the Savannah River.” “Then in the year 1781, I was drafted for a tour of 3 months and was attached to Captain Richards, a regular officer (as he understood). In this service he was employed in guarding prisoners, and etc about Hillsborough, NC; ad shortly after Cornwallis’ defeat, was discharged a few days before his time expired.” “…I know of no living witness to establish his service, except for the tour of 9 months service as above set out, my brother, Jonathan Montgomery was out the same time with me and can testify as to my services for that time.” Interrogatories: He was born in 1761 in Pennsylvania. He has no record of his age, except what he got of his parents. He lived in Orange County, NC when called into service, then stayed till 1818 or 1819, then moved to South Carolina, and then moved about 6 years since. The regular officers he recollected were Col. Lytle and Major Nelson. He was not much with the regulars.
