It was passed on to his son Noah Cole. Noah gave the book to his daughter Rissie Ann Cole after he married his second wife Esta Stout. Rissie passed it to her daughter Elizabeth Ann, the current owner of the Testament and the transcriber of the following information. The following vital data is recorded on the blank page after the New Testament and immediately prior to the Book of Psalms. The data is recorded in pencil and appears to be in the same handwriting. Since the events are not in chronological sequence, they were not recorded when they occurred. Ann Nobles, P.O. Box 491, Chadbourn, NC, 28431, as of 12 February 2000. "The New Testament of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, according to the Commonly Received Version." (Philadephia: American Baptist Publication Society, 1420 Chestnut Street, no publication date given.) The Testament contains The Book of Psalms following the end of the New Testament. "Solimon Wilson born, Aug. 2, 1853. Sarrahphine Cole Born Dec. 11, 1846 married to Demsey Garland. Elizabeth Garland born Dec. 7, 1862. S. A. Garland born July 27, 1865. Age 55 years 6 months 26 days." The title page of the Book of Psalms contains the following two entries: "J H Cole was Borned Desember 19, 1856" This entry is in pencil. The handwriting is very shaky and appears to be that characteristic of an elderly person. "J. H. Cole Died Aug. 9, 1936." This entry is in pencil. This writer believes this is the handwriting of J. H. Cole's granddaughter Rissie Ann Cole, the mother of this writer. Three notes are filed between pages of the Testament. The first is a receipt written in pencil on a lined page 2-1/2 inches by 4-1/4 inches. The handwriting is different from the Testment entries and the other notes. The receipt reads "Rcd of J. H. Cole. One ($1.00) Dollar, for officers cost, for Re?????ng one Team of mules and wagon. and harness. From James Holder. This Apr 19/18 R E ????? D. S. [?deputy sheriff?] The second note in pencil on a piece of lined paper, 5 inches wide by 1 inch, contains the single address "Hurrey Camp Va". The handwriting is different from any in the Testament or the other notes. The third note on a full sheet of lined paper, 5 inches by 8 inches, and contains a record of work done. "Desember 8 1921 Noah Cole holing corn cts 50 ??dock 10 4 work ours 9 135 8 work 5 75 9 10 150 12 10 150 13 ?0 150 15 8 120" * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GENEALOGICAL BACKGROUND John Hamiltion Cole, son of [Benjamin] Frank Cole and [Elizabeth] "Betsy" Arnold, was born 19 December 1856 in [probably Carter County] Tennessee. John died 9 August 1936 in Johnson City, Ward #2, Washington County, Tennessee, at age 79. He was interred 11 August 1936, in Richey Cemetery. [John Hamilton Cole, Death Certificate, Washington County, Roll No. 8, Book 1936, Page 23829, Tennessee State Library and Archives, Nashville, Tennessee.] John H. Cole is the great grandfather of this writer. John supposedly married twice. He probably married (1) Martha Elizabeth ?, born ca 1855 in ?Virginia. She was supposedly interred "upon Stony Creek with Grandpa". He probably married (2) Louise Ellen Wilson, daughter of Solimon Wilson and Sarrahphine Cole. That the Louisa E. Cole on his death certificate is the Louisa Ellen Wilson mentioned in the testament entries requires additional documentation. Family tradition states that "Grandpa" was a lot older than "Granny Louise". John Hamilton Cole and Martha Elizabeth had several children, two of which are Noah, grandfather of this writer, and Minerva, who supposedly married Jim Holder. Jim is probably the James Holder mentioned in the receipt transcribed above. The receipt suggests that John had to get the sheriff's deputy to retrieve a team, wagon, and harness from his son-in-law.
