Directions: From Butler, TN, travel South on TN-67 W for about 3 miles to TN-159 E/US-321 S. Turn Left (Southeast) on TN-159 E/US- 321 S toward Elk Mills and continue for about 7 miles. Turn Right (Due South) when you see the sign for the Elk Mills Baptist Church. Take the 2nd Right and head West on Heaton Branch Road. This will turn into a narrow dirt/gravel road and you will feel like you are lost. You are not. Continue up the mountain for about 1.3 miles. Turn Right (Southwest) at the fork to stay on Heaton Branch Road and continue another 1 mile. You will pass a beautiful rustic-type house on the right just before you come to the next fork in the road, Turn Left (Due West) to stay on Heaton Branch Road and continue for another 1.2 miles. Turn Left (Due South) to stay on Heaton Branch Road (the road will end if you miss the turn, so nothing to worry about if you do) and continue for another 1.1 miles. When you reach the end, you will see the church off to your Left. It's less than 5 miles from the highway, but it took me almost 30 minutes in my van due to the roads. You don't want to make this trip when it's raining or snowing unless you have a 4WD, but on a dry clear day you should be fine. I had a good signal lock on my GPS most of the way and (although you wouldn't think so) the dirt roads are all on the map. Last Name First Name Middle Name Birth Death Comment ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Baird Gloria Jean 21 Sep 1947 21 Oct 1948 Inscription: 'Dau. of D.M. & A.J. Baird' Additional Comments: The church was abandoned in the 1970's but the cemetery is still maintained and in use. There has been a recent renovation effort with the church itself, with quite a lot of work done in the last 5 years or so. Although I didn't try it myself, I'm given to understand that the old privy (outhouse) behind the church just inside the treeline is still functional.
