Rosa J. Cornforth was his widowed sister-in-law. Carter County, Tennessee Deeds, Book 2, p. 189 Know all men by these presents that J. Hopwood have this day bargained and sold and do hereby transfer and convey to Rosa J. Cornforth her heirs and assigns forever for and in consideration of six hundred dollars to me in hand paid for a certain tract or parcel of land lying and being in the county of Carter and State of Tennessee in District No. 5 containing 1 acre 1 ¼ poles more or less bounded as follows. Beginning at a planted rock at turn of road then N. 75 degrees E with the center of the road 13 poles to planted rock on Mrs. Bindwells line thence with her line N 39 degrees W. 20 poles 14 links to a planted rock then south 72 degrees and 30 degrees W 4 poles and 12 links to a stake in center of the road then with the road S 13 degrees E 18 poles and 17 links to the beginning to have and to hold the same to the said Rosa J. Cornforth her heirs and assigns forever. I do covenant with the said Rosa J. Cornforth that I am lawfully seized of said land have a good right to convey it and the same is unencumbered. I do further covenant and bind myself my heirs and assigns to warrant and forever defend the title to the said land and every part thereof to the said Rosa Cornforth her heirs and assigns forever against the lawful claims of all persons whomsoever all erasures and interliniations made before signing. It is further agreed between J. Ho0pwood of the first part and Rosa J. Cornforth her heirs and assigns of the second part that the land herein described shall never in the future be used as premises for the manufacture or sale of intoxicating liquors. Furthermore should this clause be violated this land then and there becomes the property of Milligan College to be used by the Trustees of the college to the best interests of the Institution. This the 3rd day of Sept. 1884.
