He was born in Amelia County, Virginia, in 1755 or 1756. He moved with his family to the section of North Carolina which later became Washington and Carter Counties, Tennessee. He resided in Washington County, then North Carolina, when he enlisted in a North Carolina Company in November, 1779. His brothers, Joseph and William Wilson, volunteered when he did. John Wilson lived in that part of Washington County which was subsequently erected as Carter County and was located there the rest of his life. He married Elizabeth, widow of John Lindsay, September 2, 1837 or 1838. The widow in applying for a pension said that she married him the day he died.
