A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Malley E. and Lillie Arnett Bennett. Mr. Bennett was a retired employee of North American Rayon Corporation and was also a carpenter. He served in the 103rd Inf. Division of the United States Army during World War II. He was a member and elder of the Blue Springs Christian Church and prior to his illness served as choir director and church bus driver. He was an avid fisherman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Samuel Bennett, Barney Bennett and Johnny C. Bennett. Survivors include his wife, Mary Evelyn Loveless Bennett; a daughter and son-in-law, Penny Sue and Rick Campbell, of the home; three grandchildren, Jermey Campbell and his wife Nikki, Lynnette Whitehead and Casey Davis; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Jane Ward of Johnson City and Myrtle Rhudy of Jonesborough; and three brothers, Grant and Clinton Bennett, both of Elizabethton, and Martin Bennett of Hampton. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services for Mr. Bennett will be conducted at 8 p.m. Monday, July 23, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with Mr. Richard Thomason officiating. Graveside services and interment will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 24, in the Bowers Cemetery (Roy Bowers Road) with military graveside honors provided by the V.F.W. Post No. 2166 and the Tennessee National Guard. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the cemetery at 2:50 p.m. Tuesday, will be Denny Bowers, Willard Loveless, Dairus Bowers, Randy Bowers, Terry Oliver and Gayle Oliver. Honorary pallbearers will be his church family, friends and neighbors of the Blue Springs Community. The family would like to express a special "Thank You" to Terry Oliver and the staff and employees of Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation, Kingsport. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Family and friends will assemble at the cemetery at 2:50 p.m. Tuesday.
