Mr. Birchfield was a native of Carter County and a son of the late Charlie Abraham and Dora Elizabeth Hayes Birchfield. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Tom, Bill, Pete and Luther Birchfield, and four sisters, Delia Clawson, Lethia Cable, Nell Ward and Gladys Birchfield. Mr. Birchfield was a member of the Church of Christ. Ray was a lifelong musician and music lover. Early in life he wrote songs, played guitar, sang and recorded his own music, playing regularly at the Bonnie Kate Theatre, on the Bonnie Lou & Buster Show, and on various other TV and radio shows. Later in life he played with several different gospel, country, and bluegrass groups as their bass guitarist. His favorite performer was George Jones. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Johnny and Crystal Birchfield; a very special grandson, William Logan Birchfield; a special niece, Edith Guy, and nephew, Wayne Ward. Several other nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services for Mr. Birchfield will be conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Doug Hardin officiating. Graveside services and interment will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 11, in the Walnut Mountain Cemetery. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 10 a.m. Wednesday, will be Johnny Birchfield, Bobby Smith, Wayne Ward, L.J. Heaton, Harvey Tester and Josh Spain. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Friends may also call at the residence of his son. To those who prefer, memorials may be made to the funeral home to help with expenses. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 10 a.m. Wednesday to go to the cemetery.
