Bowers John Chris Bowers, 91, 2446 Elizabethton Highway, Johnson City, died Monday, May 29, 2006, at Ivy Hall Nursing Home following a brief illness. Mr. Bowers was a native of Roan Mountain, Shell Creek Community, and a son of the late John and Macie McClain Bowers. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Womack, and a brother, H. Taylor Bowers. Mr. Bowers was a member of First Freewill Baptist Church of Elizabethton and retired from the United States Postal Service, Elizabethton, with 30 years service. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II, and was a member of the VFW Post No. 2166. He was also a lifetime member of the Elizabethton Elks Lodge. Survivors include his wife, Ida "Pat" Bowers, of the home; a stepson, David Estep, Elizabethton; a granddaughter, Christy L. Estep, Elizabethton; a great-granddaughter, Kathryn Hartman, Elizabethton; three nieces and one nephew; and special friends, Dana Dykes, Brenda Lloyd, John M. Frazier and Joyce Hoyle. The graveside service for Mr. Bowers will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 31, at Happy Valley Memorial Park, Elizabethton, with Rev. Tommy Maines officiating. Those who wish to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the funeral home at 9:45 a.m. Wednesday. Military Honors will be presented by the VFW Post No. 2166 and the Tennessee National Guard. Friends may call at the funeral home from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 30, at their convenience. Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers may make donations to the Carter County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 776, Elizabethton, TN 37644.
