CARTER COUNTY, TN - OBITUARIES - William Franklin "Frank" Baker, 2 Jan 2004 ----¤¤¤---- William Franklin "Frank" Baker, 77, Glenview Drive, Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord Friday, January 2, 2004, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. Mr. Baker was a native of Birchwood, Tenn., and a son of the late William F. Baker Sr. and Martha Jane Priddy Baker. He was also preceded in death by a brother, four sisters and a nephew. Mr. Baker graduated from Carson-Newman College with a B.S. Degree in Education in 1949, and later received his Master's Degree from East T ennessee State University. He taught in the Hamilton County School System for two years, then taught in the Elizabethton City School System for 36 years. He taught Science and was a basketball coach at T.A. Dugger Junior High School. He served as the last Principal of Duffield Academy, and he concluded the last 18 years of his career in education as the Principal of East Side Elementary School. He was a member of the American Legion and the AARP. He was a member and deacon of First Baptist Church and a member of the Four Square Sunday School Class. He was a World War II combat veteran, having fought in France and Germany with the Thirty-Sixth Infantry Division (The Texas Division). Survivors include his devoted wife of 54 years, Geraldine Bowers Baker, of the home; his beloved daughter, Sarah Jean Baker, 115 Treadway Street, Elizabethton; a sister, Betty Roark, Birchwood, Tenn.; 12 beloved nieces and nephews; several grand-nieces and grand-nephews; a brother-in-law, E.C. Alexander, Elizabethton; and a host of friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Sunday, January 4, in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home with the Rev. Brent Seals officiating. Music will be by John Bunn, soloist. Graveside services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Monday, January 5, at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Military Honors will be accorded by Captain Lynn H. Folsom V.F.W. Post #2166. Active pallbearers will be Ed Alexander III, Joe Alexander, Crawford Alexander, Chris Luker, David Moon, Andy Moon, Willie Church, Gary Elliott, Dick Ryan and Roy Huskins. Honorary pallbearers will be E.C. Alexander, Russell Curtis, Lee Spickard, Bill Armstrong, T.J. Harville, members of the Four Square Sunday School Class, teachers at East Side School, retired teachers of East Side School, Dr. Joseph May, Dr. Collier Jordan, Dr. David Baker and members of the American Legion. Everyone will meet at the cemetery at 1:20 p.m. Monday for the graveside service. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2 until 4 p.m. Sunday, prior to the service. Friends may also call at the residence, 1099 Glenview Drive, Elizabethton, at any time.
