Banks 09/22/99 Robert Edward Banks, 78, 406 East H Street, Elizabethton, died Tuesday, September 21, 1999, at NHC Health Care, Johnson City. Mr. Banks was a native of Carter County and a son of the late K.P. and Madge Crow Banks. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Byron and Vaughn Banks, and a sister, Marie Banks Street. Mr. Banks was an Army chaplain during World War II. He received a Bachelor and Master's Degree of Divinity from Butler University, and a B.A. Degree and an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Law from Milligan College. He served as Trustee and Secretary of the Board of Milligan College for over 20 years and was a Charter Member of the Board of Trustees of Emmanuel School of Religion. Mr. Banks served as City and County Attorney and practiced law in Carter County for 40 years. He was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of Dashiell Masonic Lodge #238, a Shriner with Jericho Temple, and a member of the Elizabethton Kiwanis Club. He was a member and Elder of the First Christian Church and taught the Men's Sunday School Class for many years. Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Johns Banks, of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Marilyn and Vince Carroll, Richlands, Va., and Anne and Jerome Kitchens, Elizabethton; three sons and daughters-in-law, John K. and Elizabeth Banks, Elizabethton, Dr. Steven and Jan Banks, Huntington, W.Va., and Thomas and Kathy Banks, Elizabethton; a brother, William Banks, Pittsburg, Pa.; and a sister, Nell Bowers, Salem, Va. Twelve grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home, Sunset Chapel, is in charge of arrangements. BANKS -- Funeral services for Robert Edward Banks, 78, 406 East H Street, Elizabethton, who died Tuesday, will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at the First Christian Church with Mr. Don Marshall and Mr. Tim Ross, ministers, officiating. Interment will follow at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Lewis Merryman, David Bautista, David Haga, Robert Kitchens, William Armstrong Sr., Sandy Greenwell, John L. Bowers Jr. and nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the First Christian Church Board, the Men's Sunday School Class of First Christian Church and the Carter County Bar Association. To those who desire, memorials may be made to Milligan College or the Emmanuel School of Religion, Milligan College, Tenn. 37682.
