CARTER COUNTY, TN - OBITUARIES - William Burgess Bowman, 6 Sep 2003 --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- William B. Bowman William Burgess Bowman, 74, Rose Avenue, Johnson City, died Saturday, September 6, 2003, at the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Mountain Home, following an extended illness. Mr. Bowman was a native of Carter County and a son of the late Butch and Sarah Russell Bowman. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Celia Diana Roe Bowman, in 1988, and a brother, Carroll Holden. Mr. Bowman attended Happy Valley High School and was a graduate of East Tennessee State University with a degree in mathematics. He was employed with North American Rayon Corporation from 1947 until 1952 in the Coning Department and retired from the Picitinny Arsenal Company in Rockaway, N.J., as a nuclear engineer for the Federal Government. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean Conflict and a member of the American Legion. Survivors include three daughters and two sons-in-law, Nancy and George Riedel, Rockaway, N.J., Teresa Reed, Richmond, Va., and Sheila and Floyd Reed, Piney Flats; a son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Young Wha Bowman, of the home; a brother and sister-in-law, Odell and Jean Holden, Kingsport; a sister, Helen Westmorland, Milligan College; nine grandchildren, Michelle Durning and her husband Andrew, of New Jersey, Jennifer Klee and her husband Jacob, Richmond, Va., Cindy Bowman, Milligan College, Linda Bowman, Johnson City, Samantha Reed and Sheila Reed, both of Piney Flats, George Riedel III, Rockaway, N.J., Randall Reed Jr., Richmond, Va., and Jerry Bowman Jr., Johnson City; two sisters-in-law, Hazel Holden, Milligan College, and Wylene Vandeventer, Elizabethton; and a brother-in-law, Mack McGee, Johnson City. Several nieces and nephews also survive. The funeral service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday, September 11, in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home with the Rev. D.C. Byrd and the Rev. Nathan Jennings officiating. The graveside service and interment will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday, September 12, at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Military Honors will be accorded by the Captain Lynn H. Folsom VFW Post #2166. Active pallbearers will be George Riedel Jr., George Riedel III, Andrew Durning, Jerry Bowman Jr., Randall Reed Jr. and James Warren. Honorary pallbearers will be the Staff, Nurses and Physicians at the James H. Quillen V.A. Medical Center I.C.U. Unit, members of River of Life Church and Amedisys Home Health of Johnson City. To those who desire, memorials may be made to the Johnson City Animal Shelter, 525 Sells Avenue, Johnson City, TN 37601. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, prior to the service. Friends may also call at the residence at any time, or at the residence of a daughter, Shelia Reed, 408 Piney Avenue, Piney Flats.
