Birchfield Elva G. Oaks Birchfield, 81, formerly of Route 3, Roan Mountain, died Monday, May 27, 2002, at Johnson City Medical Center after an extended illness. Mrs. Birchfield was a native of Shell Creek and the daughter of the late Near and Ethel Greer Oaks. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Walter Birchfield; two children, Luther and Armetta Holly; five sisters, Odie Johnson, Hazel Hayes, Alice Beeler, Lola Church and Lula Oaks; and a brother, Frederick Oaks. Mrs. Birchfield retired from Bemberg in 1957 and was a homemaker. She was a member of Evergreen Free Will Baptist Church and a member of Ladies Aide of the church. Survivors include three sons, Herbert Larry Dean Oaks, Morristown, Henry David Oaks, Raleigh-Durham, N.C., and Walden Howard Birchfield, Jonesborough; two stepchildren, Martha and Junior; three sisters, Lois Field, Elk Park, N.C., Nola Freeman, Jonesborough, and Mary Ruth Markland, Roan Mountain; and two brothers, Tull Oaks, Roan Mountain, and Levi Oaks, Gary, Ind. Seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. Tetrick Funeral Services, 3001 Peoples Street, Johnson City, (423) 610- 7171, is in charge of arrangements. BIRCHFIELD -- Funeral services for Elva G. Oaks Birchfield, 81, formerly of Route 3, Roan Mountain, who died Monday, May 27, 2002, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 30, in the Sunrise Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Services with Pastor Val Burgett officiating. Entombment services will follow at Washington County Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be William Eller, Scott Oaks, Tim Oaks, Anthony Oaks, Raymond Trent, John Birchfield and Thomas Birchfield. Honorary pallbearers will be Larry Hern and David Reynolds. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the American Diabetes Association, 900 E. Hill Avenue, Suite 240, Knoxville, TN 37915. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, and from 12 noon to 2 p.m. Thursday, at Tetrick Funeral Services of Johnson City. Mrs. Birchfield enjoyed canning food and giving it to her friends. She also loved to help others and do volunteer work.
