Mrs. Minnie Shell Birchfield, 78, of Rt. 3, Roan Mountain, died Tuesday at
7:30 a.m. in Cannon Memorial Hospital, Banner Elk, N.C., following a brief
illness.  Mrs. Birchfield was a native of Carter County, and the daughter of
the late Johl L. and Lydia Boone Shell.  She was preceded in death by her
husband, Nathan Birchfield in March, 1966.  She was a member of the Evergreen
Freewill Baptist Church.  Survivors are three daughters, Mrs. Maude Holden and
Mrs. Blanche Roberts, both of the home, and Mrs. Glenna Shell, Rt. 6 Johnson
City; four sisters, Miss Lydia Shell, Roan Mountain; Mrs. Bonnie Townsend and
Mrs. Nelle Shell, both of Johnson City, and Mrs. Faye Crumley, Elizabethton;
two brothers, Hobert Shell, Johnson City, and Earnest Shell, Elizabethton;
fifteen grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews also
survive.  Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
