CARTER COUNTY, TN - OBITUARIES - Mae Hughes Brown, 9 Apr 2005 ----¤¤¤---- Mrs. Mae Hughes Brown, 89, of Roan Mountain, died Saturday, April 9, 2005, at Roan Highlands Nursing Center, Roan Mountain, surrounded by family and friends, after a battle with cancer. Mrs. Brown was a native of Cove Creek in Roan Mountain, Tenn., and a daughter of the late G.W. and Maggie Gouge Hughes. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Orville Brown, in 1966, and all 11 siblings, Norie Odom, Burley Hughes, Pearl Hughes, Blanche Arrowood, Julie Burket, Frances Gardener, Roby Hughes, Clyde Hughes, Ruth Troutman, Mildred Heaton and Lawrence Hughes. Mrs. Brown was a member of the First Baptist Church of Roan Mountain. She retired from the Carter County School System. She had lived a number of years after retirement in Florida, before moving back to Tennessee in 2001. Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Florence and Sam Sykes, Eustis, Fla., Bobbie and Ed Cranor, Johnson City, and Linda and Bill Watson, Roan Mountain; and eight grandchildren, Terri Johnson, Debbie Larew, Kathy Thompkins, Keith Cranor, Kim Barnes, Lori Mosakewicz, James Watson and Robert Watson. Eleven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson also survive. Funeral services for Mrs. Brown will be conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, in the Rhododendron Chapel, Roan Mountain, with Lt. Commander Johny Johnson, Ret. Navy Chaplain, officiating. Music will be under the direction of Gail Campbell. Active pallbearers will be family members. Graveside services will be conducted at l0 a.m. Wednesday, April 13, at Johnson Cemetery in the Crabtree Community of Roan Mountain. Everyone will meet at the cemetery at 9:55 a.m. Wednesday for the graveside service. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday, prior to the service. Friends may call at the residence of a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Bill Watson, Heaton Ridge Road, Roan Mountain, at anytime.
