CARTER COUNTY, TN - OBITUARIES - Melvin W. Buckles, 8 Oct 2004 --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- Melvin W. Buckles, 73, Highway 91, Elizabethton, died Friday, October 8, 2004, in the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center. Mr. Buckles was a native of Carter County and a son of the late David Carter and Nannie Florence VanHuss Buckles. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Worley Buckles. Mr. Buckles was a retired employee of the Raytheon Corporation, having worked there for 35 years. He was a member of Hunter First Baptist Church and the Senior Adult Men's Sunday School Class. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Survivors include his wife, Rebecca Rogers Buckles; a son and daughter- in-law, Stephen Scott and Heather Buckles, Elizabethton; and a granddaughter, Celeste Buckles. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Monday, October 11, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with Dr. Dennis Deese, Rev. Eric Eggers and Rev. Burl Garland officiating. Music will be provided by Chris and Crystal Headley. Graveside services and interment will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 12, in the National Cemetery, Mountain Home. V.F.W. Post No. 2166 will conduct military graveside honors. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday, will be Mike Ensor, Greg Pierce, Jeff Pierce, Keith Glover, Daniel Holder, Nick Holder, Fornie VanHuss, Sherrill VanHuss and Ron Buckles. Honorary pallbearers will be his church family, Dr. Daniel Paul, Lynn Williams, Rev. Jamie Ferguson, Jason Wells, Howard Carlton, David Sexton, Bill Williams and Shortline Officers and all of the Northeast Correctional Center employees. Also surviving are his special friends, Val Deaton, Judy Couch, Wanda Townsend, Eulalee Pierce and Rosemary Pierce. The family would like to express a special "Thank You" to the doctors, staff and nurses at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center Building 162, 2nd Floor. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Friends may also call at his residence.
