"Shirley" Burrow, 79, 2175 Siam Road, Elizabethton, died Sunday, March 10, 2002, at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center. Mr. Burrow was a native of Carter County and a son of the late Oscar and Verne Mae Stout Burrow. He was also preceded in death by his former wife, Jane Ella Hart Burrow, June 5, 2001, a son, Gary Lee Burrow, three sisters, Ruby Napolitano, Mattie Pleasant and Dinah Parker, a brother, Bill Burrow, and two nephews, David Burrow and Buddy Pleasant. Mr. Burrow lived in Johnson County for a number of years before returning to Elizabethton. He was a 1941 graduate of Johnson County High School. He was a former merchant, having operated the Burrows Shopping Center in the Tiger Valley Community of Hampton. He was employed by the Carter County Board of Education as custodian at Siam Middle School and Hampton Elementary School. He was owner of Isaacs Apartments and other rental properties. Mr. Burrow was a former Carter County Commissioner and a member of the Carter County Equalization Board. He was a member of Beck Mountain Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and served in the National Guard during the Korean Conflict. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Phillip Nave, Elizabethton, and Beverly and Danny Davis, Lottsburg, Va.; a son, James David Burrow, Knoxville; a sister, Carolyn Sue Potter, Mountain City; three brothers, Robert Burrow, Elizabethton, John Burrow, Mountain City, and Harry Burrow, Morgantown, W.Va.; a granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Michelle and Jerry Bowers, Elizabethton; a grandson, Gary Scott Blevins, Johnson City; and a great-granddaughter, Sarah Bowers, Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Memorial Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. BURROW -- Funeral services for I.S. "Shirley" Burrow, 79, 2175 Siam Road, Elizabethton, who died Sunday, March 10, 2002, will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Ronnie Campbell and the Rev. Dean Smith officiating. Music will be under the direction of Karen Timbs, pianist, and Carolyn Pleasant, organist. Interment will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 13, at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Military Graveside Honors accorded by the Captain Lynn H. Folsom VFW Post #2166. Active pallbearers will be Gary Scott Blevins, Tom Pleasant, Donald Pleasant, Ralph Morris, Albert Ellison, Gary Smith, Kevin Ward, Billy Joe Burrow, Terry Barnes, Phillip Nave and Carl Nave. Honorary pallbearers will be the Faculty and Staff of Hampton Elementary School, John Holtsclaw and members of the Equalization Board, Doctors and Staff of the Veterans Administration Hospital SICU, Jeffery Lingerfelt, Robert Wilson, Melissa Davis, Dana Brown, Lawrence Range, Shell and Associates, Jim Pauley, Leonard Hyder and acquaintances in the Tiger Valley Community. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Friends may call at other times at the residence of a daughter and son-in-law, Phillip and Judy Nave, 130 Phil Nave Road, Elizabethton.
