Byrd, 98, 142 Simerly Creek Road, Hampton, died Sunday, December 30, 2001, at Johnson City Medical Center. Mr. Byrd was a native of Carter County and a son of the late James Newton and Nancy Ann Brewer Byrd. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Etta G. Guinn Byrd, who died in 1979. Mr. Byrd was a retired carpenter and a member of Little Doe Free Will Baptist Church. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Thurman (Roxie) Simerly, Hampton, and Mrs. Bob (Colleen) Bowling, Elizabethton; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Arnold Byrd, of the home, Donald Byrd, Hampton, and Ivan and Gloria Byrd, Morristown; and a sister, Mrs. Nannie Presnell, Elizabethton. Twenty-two grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and nine great-great-grandchildren also survive. Memorial Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. BYRD -- Funeral services for John C. Byrd, 98, 142 Simerly Creek Road, Hampton, who died Sunday, December 30, 2001, were conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday, January 1, 2002, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Shane Waters officiating. Music was provided by the Little Doe Free Will Baptist Church Choir. Graveside services and interment will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 2, in the Oak Hill Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 1:15 p.m. Wednesday, will be Joe Street, George Roberson, Jimmy Collins, Elbert Lyons, Harold Street and Glen Roy Cates. Honorary pallbearers will be employees of Memorial Funeral Chapel. The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
