CARTER COUNTY, TN - OBITUARIES - William D. "Bob" Carter, 4 May 2005 --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- William D. "Bob" Carter, 79, Fairway Drive, Johnson City, passed away Wednesday, May 4, 2005, at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center. Mr. Carter was a member of First Christian Church of Elizabethton. He was born in Carter County, but had lived in Johnson City for many years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Lucy Estep Carter, and by four brothers and three sisters. Mr. Carter was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy, and was a graduate of East Tennessee State University. He retired from the State of Tennessee. He was an avid golfer, a member of the Johnson City Country Club and had served on the Johnson City United Way Board. Survivors include his wife, Shirley Hughes Carter, of the home; a son, Steve Dale Carter, Johnson City; two sisters, Ruth Howell, Johnson City, and Nell Gagliona, New Orleans, La.; a brother, George Carter, Elizabethton; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service for Mr. Carter will be conducted at 8 p.m. Friday, May 6, in the Sunrise Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Services, Johnson City, with Steve McAuley, minister, officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday, prior to the service. Friends may also call at the residence at anytime. Active pallbearers will be Carroll Richardson, Don Shearin, John McKinnon, Harold Whitson, Al DiGregorio, Allen Howell, Kenny Carter and Jim Richardson. The graveside and committal service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 7, at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Friends and pallbearers are asked to meet at the cemetery at 9:50 a.m. Saturday. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 508 Princeton Road, Suite 102, Johnson City, TN 37601-2030.
