Cates Mrs. Willie Berniece Hampton Cates, 92, 454 Cloudland Drive, Roan Mountain, died Monday, May 27, 2002, at Lakeway Regional Hospital, Morristown, following a brief illness. Mrs. Cates was a native of Roan Mountain and the daughter of the late W.O. and Annie Hughes Hampton. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Paul R. Cates, in 1993, and a brother, E.E. Hampton. Mrs. Cates was a retired secretary at Carson-Newman College, Jefferson City, and a former part owner of the Rhododendron Gift and Antique Shop. She was a charter member of the Roan Mountain Citizens Club and a Federated Flower Show Judge. She was a member of Roan Mountain First Baptist Church. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Robert Lee and Gwen Cates, Morristown; a grandson and granddaughter-in-law, James Robert Paul and Sharon Cates, Old Hickory; a grandson, Christopher Farris Cates, Talbott; a great- grandson, Abraham Lige Cates, Old Hickory; a sister, Juanita Hampton, Roan Mountain; and a sister-in-law, Mary Alice Hampton, Roan Mountain. Richard Stout officiating. Graveside services will follow at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Brock Henry, Robb Cates, Chris Cates, Gilbert Honeycutt, Ben Williams and Joe Shell. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, prior to the service.
