CARTER COUNTY, TN - OBITUARIES - Rev. Roy Cates, 22 Nov 2002 ----¤¤¤---- Rev. Roy Cates The Rev. Roy Cates, 89, 5679 Highway 19E, Tiger Valley community, Hampton, died Friday, Nov. 22, 2002, at Life Care Center of Elizabethton following an extended illness of three years. The Rev. Cates was a Carter County native and the son of the late J.R. and Mattie Hyder Cates. In addition to his parents, the Rev. Cates was preceded in death by one sister, Edith Cates Hyder, and two brothers, Jim Cates and Harry Cates. The Rev. Cates was a faithful member of Little Doe Free Will Baptist Church, where he had many years of perfect attendance, served as a Sunday school teacher, sang in the church choir, and served as a deacon. He served as the church's pastor on two occasions. The Rev. Cates was ordained as a minister in May 1967. In addition to Little Doe, he also pastored at Pearce's Chapel, Upper Gap Creek, Green Mountain and St. John Free Will Baptist churches. He was a member of the Toe River Free Will Baptist Association and served as clerk for 35 years. He was retired from the Carter County School System, having served as principal and teacher and belonged to the Retired Teachers Association. The Rev. Cates was a World War II veteran, having served 4 1/2 years with the 428th Engineer Dump Truck Company in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska, where he helped build the AlCan Highway. He also served in China, Burma and India. During his tour of duty, his travels took him around the world. Survivors include his wife of almost 57 years, Lydia Alma Sutphin Cates, of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Janet Ruth and Scott Lusk, Johnson City; two sons and daughters-in-law, Glenn Roy and Vivian Cates, Hampton, and Terry and Monnie Cates, Crystal River, Fla.; three brothers and one sister-in-law, Clyde and Maxine Cates, Ray and Frank Cates, all of Hampton; four sisters, Ethel Wilson, Johnson City, Mildred Jamison, Fredericksburg, Va., Mary Ruth Cole, Grayson, Ky., and Sally Cates, Hampton; six grandchildren, Season and Joe Lusk, Glenna and Brooke Cates, and Jason and Jeremy Cates; two stepgrandchildren, Marty and William Wilson of Florida; one aunt, Rhoda Cates Hyder; four sisters-in- law, Virginia Cates, Edna Taylor, Helen Saylor and Hazel Hrush, and one brother-in-law, Gene Sutphin; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
