Cole Arlie Matson Cole, 87, Life Care Center of Elizabethton, formerly of 690 Dry Hollow Road, Elizabethton, died Thursday, September 28, 2000, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. Mr. Cole was a native of Carter County and a son of the late Joseph and Maggie Fletcher Cole. Mr. Cole was retired from the Little Creek Fire Department, U.S. Naval Base, Norfolk, Va., having retired in 1962. He was a member of the Mutual Aid Association of Little Creek, Va. Mr. Cole served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II, having served in the Guadalcanal, The Goodenough Island, Melbourne, Australia, and the Cape Gloucester Campaigns. He was a lifetime member of the Guadalcanal Veterans Organization and was also a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Post #2166. He was an avid baseball fan and was a loyal supporter of the Unaka High School Baseball Team. At one time he attended all Unaka home and away games for 17 years. He was a member of the Stoney Creek Baptist Church but attended Unaka Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Bernice Peters Cole; several nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, Dennis Laws; and several brothers-in- law and sisters-in-law. Memorial Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. COLE -- Graveside services for Arlie Matson Cole, 87, Life Care Center of Elizabethton, formerly of 690 Dry Hollow Road, Elizabethton, who died Thursday, September 28, 2000, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, October 1, in the Blevins Cemetery with the Rev. D.C. Byrd officiating. Interment will follow the service. Military Graveside Honors will be accorded by the V.F.W. Post #2166. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the cemetery at 1:50 p.m. Sunday, will be A.D. "Sonny" Fletcher, Ernest "Gebe" Ritchie, Jerry White, Buford Peters, Jimmy Hyder and Larry Sol Wilson. Honorary pallbearers will be M.L. Fisher, Bobby Wilson, Herman Lewis, Dr. R.S. Martin, Greg Fisher, Floyd Richardson, Ralph Cole, Ann and Jennifer Ensor, the Staff of the North Wing of Life Care Center of Elizabethton, and his nephews and nieces. The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Friends may also call at the residence of his nephew, Dennis Laws, 344 Peters Hollow Road, Elizabethton. Family and friends will assemble at the cemetery at 1:50 p.m. Sunday. Memorial Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
