CARTER COUNTY, TN - OBITUARIES - Fred Pershing Davis, 4 Dec 2003 ----¤¤¤---- Fred Pershing Davis, age 85, of 214 West K Street, Elizabethton, died Thursday evening in the Broadmore Assisted Living Center in Johnson City following a lengthy illness. Mr. Davis was a native of Virginia and the son of the late Grady and Blanche B. Davis. Mr. Davis had lived in Elizabethton since 1929. He was a member of the 1936 class of Elizabethton High School. Mr. Davis had attended Milligan College and East Tennessee State College. Mr. Davis was a member of the 117th Army Reserve Unit of Elizabethton that was called into active duty by President Franklin D. Roosevelt at the start of World War II. At the time Mr. Davis was called into active duty, he was one quarter short of graduating from East Tennessee State College. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he served as a member and chairman of the Board of Trustees for many years. He was a member of the Wesley Bible Sunday School Class. Mr. Davis and his wife were the owners and operators of Fred Davis Jewelers of Elizabethton for 50 years. He had retired in 2000. He was a veteran of World War II, a retired U.S. Army Reserve Colonel, and had participated in combat duty in the Philippines. He graduated from the Officers Candidate School in Fort Benning, Ga., and the Command and General Staff School in Fort Leavenworth, Kan. He was an active member of the Reserve Officers Association for 30 years during which time he had served as president of the association. Fred had served as a member of the Board of Directors of Carter County Bank from 1974 until 2002. He was a past president of the Elizabethton Jaycees and was voted as Outstanding Young Man of the Year. He was a member and past president of the Elizabethton Kiwanis Club, had served as member and chairman of the Economic Development Commission, and had served as a director of the Tennessee Retail Merchant's Council. He was a member of VFW Post 2166, the American Legion Post 49, the Elizabethton Elks Lodge, a member for many years of the Elizabethton Golf Club, a member of Dashiel Masonic Lodge, a York Rite Mason, a Scottish Rite Mason and a member of Jericho Shrine Temple. He is survived by his wife, Marguerite Clark Davis of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mikki Davis Costner and Scott Costner of Gallatin, Beth Davis Blomberg and Ronnie Blomberg of Roswell, Ga.; four grandchildren, Kelli Parker, Scotty and Davis Costner, and Chesley Blomberg, and one sister, Leah (Teed) Baker of Charlottesville, Va. The funeral service for Mr. Davis will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill Carter officiating. Entombment will follow in the Mausoleum of Peace at Happy Valley Memorial Park with the Rev. Buford Hankins officiating. The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. Sunday until the service hour. Active pallbearers will be Scott Costner, Ronnie Blomberg, Davis Costner, Scott Costner, Jr., Dr. John Parker and Ronnie McCloud. In lieu of lowers, donations may be made in memory of Mr. Davis to the General Fund of the First United Methodist Church, 325 East E Street, Elizabethton.
