CARTER COUNTY, TN - OBITUARIES - Howard "Barney" Fondren, 28 Feb 2005 --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- Howard "Barney" Fondren, 96, formerly of Sylvan Hill Road, Elizabethton, died Monday, February 28, 2005, at Hermitage Health Care. Mr. Fondren was a native and lifelong resident of Carter County and the son of the late Samuel Albert and Jennie Cook Fondren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister. Mr. Fondren was retired after 46 years of service from North American Rayon Corporation. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Elizabethton where he had served as a Deacon and as Treasurer. He was a charter member and the oldest living past Master of Dashiell Masonic Lodge #238 F&AM, the York Rite Body, the Elizabethton Senior Citizens Center and the AARP. Mr. Fondren had served on the Board of Directors of the Happy Valley Credit Union for many years. Survivors include the love of his life for 73 years, Louise Bruce Fondren, Elizabethton; two daughters, Sherry Lynn Campbell, Baltimore, Md., and Jane Kay Markette, Stone Mountain, Ga.; a brother, Harry Albert Fondren, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and a sister, Hazel Wilkinson, Elizabethton. Six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services for Mr. Fondren will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 5, in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home with Rev. Brent Seals officiating. A Masonic service will follow by Dashiell Masonic Lodge #238 F&AM. Music will be under the direction of Ms. June Gouge. Interment will follow the funeral service at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be three grandsons, Bruce Campbell, Brian Campbell and Josh Markette, and Lynn Simerly, Warren Lamb and Ricky Malone. Honorary pallbearers will be Jack Buck, Harry Givan, Mack Cooke, the Deacons of First Baptist Church of Elizabethton and the Directors and Committee Members of Happy Valley Credit Union.
