Mrs. Garland was a native of Carter County and the daughter of the late John and Myrtle Fadley Leonard. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Charlie "Red" Garland; a son, Roger Garland; five sisters, Mamie Holly, Janie Turner, Clara Freeman, Dorothy Leonard and Annie McKinney; and three brothers, George, Hubert and Barley Leonard. Mrs. Garland was a member of the Eastern Star, Roan Mountain, and a member of Little Mountain Baptist Church. Survivors include a sister, Pansy Barlow, Johnson City; a grandson, Stewart Ingram, Hampton; and a great-grandson, Logan Ingram, Hampton. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Memorial Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. GARLAND -- Funeral services for Bessie Garland, formerly of 264 North Road, Johnson City, having lived most of her life in Roan Mountain, who died Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at Pine Ridge Care Center, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, April 6, at Little Mountain Baptist Church, Roan Mountain, with the Rev. Steve Coonse officiating. Music will be under the direction of the Little Mountain Baptist Church Choir. Interment will follow in the Holly Hill Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Gary Couch, Tony Cox, Dwight Proffitt, Wayne Blevins, Tony Cates, Chris Roberts, Wilburn Holly and A.B. Holly. Honorary pallbearers will be Brandon Cox, Mark Moffitt, Dennis Holly, Bobby Jay, Bill Couch, Carlos McNabb, Eddie Grindstaff and Curtis Carter. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Friends may also call at the residence of a sister, Pansy Barlow, 131 Spring Drive, Johnson City, at any time.
