CARTER COUNTY, TN - OBITUARIES - Rev. Robert "Ray" Grindstaff, 30 Jun 2002 ----¤¤¤---- The Rev. Robert Grindstaff The Rev. Robert "Ray" Grindstaff, 85, 102 Thomas Lincoln Place, Elizabethton, formerly of 2149 Siam Road, Elizabethton, died Sunday, June 30, 2002, at his residence following an extended illness. The Rev. Grindstaff was a native and lifelong resident of Carter County and a son of the late Isaac Daniel (I.D. "Ike") and Myrtle Daugherty Grindstaff. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Mamie Slagle Grindstaff, in December 2000, and by three brothers and a sister. The Rev. Grindstaff was a graduate of Elizabethton High School, attended Mars Hill College, was a 1944 graduate of Carson-Newman College and graduated from the Southern Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., with a Master's Degree in Divinity. He also received a Teachers Certificate from ETSU in Speech Therapy. He was a member of the Watauga Baptist Association where he was the former secretary. He had served at Hales Memorial Chapel for more than 25 years and had been an Interim Pastor at many local Baptist churches. The Rev. Grindstaff taught Speech Therapy in the Carter County School System for over 20 years. He attended Keenburg Free Will Baptist Church and was a member of the N.E.A. and the T.E.A. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Robert E. and Beth Altizer Grindstaff, with whom he made his home; three granddaughters, Kelli Grindstaff, Jordan Grindstaff and Mrs. Jason (Riley) Thompson, all of Elizabethton; and a great-grandson, Ian Isaiah Thompson, Elizabethton. Robert "Ray" Grindstaff, 85, 102 Thomas Lincoln Place, Elizabethton, formerly of 2149 Siam Road, Elizabethton, who died Sunday, June 30, 2002, will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 3, in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home with the Rev. Mark Street officiating. Music will be provided by The Tennessee Melody Boys. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 5, at Happy Valley Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, prior to the service. Friends may call at the residence of his son, Dr. Robert Grindstaff, 102 Thomas Lincoln Place, Elizabethton, at any time. Active pallbearers will be Bobby Ward, Phillip Ramsey, Roston Smith III, Jason Thompson, Sabin Shell, Bill Mosley, Landon Humphrey, Jeff Hilton and Danny Bullock.
