CARTER COUNTY, TN - OBITUARIES - Sherman Grindstaff, 22 Sep 2004 --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- Sherman Grindstaff, 73, U.S. Highway 91, Elizabethton, died Wednesday, September 22, 2004 at the Pine Ridge Care and Rehab Center where he had been compassionately cared for for the past 27 days. He had fought an extremely courageous battle with cancer for the past three years. Mr. Grindstaff was a native of Carter County and a son of the late Elbert C. and Golda Hardin Grindstaff. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Kathleen Spalding Grindstaff, June 28, 2001; by three infant sisters and by a dear niece, Gwen Carrier Widmyer. Mr. Grindstaff was a 1948 graduate of Unaka High School and a graduate of the Elizabethton Business College. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force after 20 years of service which included the Korean and Vietnam War eras. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Air Force Sergeants Association. Mr. Grindstaff accepted Jesus Christ as his savior and was baptized January 7, 2003 by the Rev. Ed Wheeler. For Sherman, the worst of times are over and the best of times will never end. He is survived by one daughter, Teresa Jo Baumann of Greeneville; three grandsons, Nick Baumann, Mike Baumann and Bill Baumann, all of Greeneville; one brother, Anthony Grindstaff and his wife, Betty, of Bristol, Tenn.; four sisters, Rena Vaught, Blacksburg, Va.; Wanda Peters, Elizabethton; Norma Carrier and her husband, Gray, of Elizabethton; Rita "Mattie" Payne and her husband, Nat, Elizabethton, who were his caregivers; one aunt, Leila McGuire, Johnson City; one sister-in-law, Normah Spalding Spowart and her husband, Jimmy, of Scotland, and a very special niece, Tracy Spowart and her sister, Caroline Smith, both of Scotland. Several nieces, nephews, cousins and many very special friends also survive. In compliance with his prearranged directive, his body was cremated and there will be no memorial services.
