Hammitt Mrs. Betty Jane Hammitt, 77, 623A Walnut Street, Elizabethton, went home to be with her Lord on Sunday, February 18, 2007, at Johnson City Medical Center following an extended illness. Mrs. Hammitt was a native of Carter County and the daughter of the late John Rhudy and Annie Bullock Shipley. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Luther F. Hammitt, November 20, 2003, and by one sister and one brother. Mrs. Hammitt was a homemaker who loved taking care of her family. She was a member of Sims Hill Christian Church. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Eva and Dickie Jones of Piney Flats and Diane and Fred Vance of Bluff City; a son and daughter-in-law, John and Mary Hammitt of Elizabethton; seven grandchildren; 13 great- grandchildren; two sisters, Margaret Pike of South Carolina and Barbara Raspberry of Virginia; and a brother, Benny Shipley of South Carolina. Several nieces and nephews also survive. The Celebration of Life Service for Mrs. Hammitt will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Monday, February 19, in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Mr. Gerald Holly, minister, officiating. Music will be under the direction of Gerald and Gloria Holly. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, prior to the service, and at other times at the home of her son, John Hammitt, 1444 Southside Road, Elizabethton. The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday, February 20, in the Mountain Home National Cemetery, Mountain Home, Tenn. Active pallbearers will be grandsons and grandsons-in-law. Honorary pallbearers will be friends and neighbors. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the funeral home at 9 a.m. Tuesday to go in procession to the cemetery.
