Harber Walter Christy "Pap" Harber, 93, of Johnson City, went to be with the Lord Thursday, Dec. 27, 2007, after a brief illness. Mr. Harber was born Dec. 1, 1914, in Pennington Gap, Va., to George E. Harber and Glessie Vanhuss Harber. He resided in Elizabethton, where he raised his sons. He eventually moved to Johnson City about 12 years ago after living in McMinnville. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Vivian Lane Harber; one son, George Ernest Harber, II; and three brothers, Tyrus, Harry, and John. Mr. Harber was a very active member of Grace Free Will Baptist Church, which helped make his life worth living. He loved his pastor, Curtis Hurt, and his church family very much. It was unusual for him to miss a church service and he was a proud member of the Senior Saints. He retired after 40 years with the TVA. He played baseball for Emory and Henry College and was an avid lifelong baseball fan. He had countless friends and loved entertaining visitors. His life was a testimony to everyone he encountered, even up to his death. He had a quick wit and always had wise Biblical advice and a sympathetic heart. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Walter L. and Jamie Harber; one grandson, Walter Lane Harber, Jr. and his wife Karis of Arlington, Texas; four granddaughters, Melody Counts and her husband Marc of Johnson City, Christy Haskins and her husband, David of Chattanooga, Jami McMullen and her husband Scott of Johnson City, and Lindi Scharfstein and her husband Benjie of Piney Flats; 14 great-grandchildren, Marcus, Connor and Chandler Counts, Jami Katherine, Rebecca and Ellie Haskins, Noah, Hannah and Micah Harber, A.J., Lindi Sue and Laney McMullen, Benjamin and Grayson Scharfstein. Also surviving are very special care-giving friends, Scott and Francie Elrod, and Pam Burkett. Funeral services will be held Sunday, Dec. 30 at 6 p.m. at Grace Free Will Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Curtis Hurt. Visitation will be held from 3-6 p.m. before the service. Interment will follow Monday morning at 11 a.m. in Washington County Memory Gardens. Everyone is asked to meet at the cemetery at 10:50 a.m. Active pallbearers will be Dean Ford, Roy Francis, Bill Greer, Laurence Jervis, Doug Jenkins, Gene Mullins, Mike Slemp and Andy Stull. Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Gary Cuozzo, Chris Crockett, Scott Elrod, Jim Lindsey, Dr. Phil Jones, and all the caring ICU staff at Northside Hospital, and the church family. In lieu of flowers and for those who wish, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Grace Free Will Baptist Church Building Fund, 2110 Knob Creek Road, Johnson City, TN 37604.
