Hartley Sherman B. Hartley, 84, 357 Slagles Road, Elizabethton, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, January 15, 2008, in Elizabethton. A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late John A. and Ruth Smith Hartley. Mr. Hartley was a retired carpenter and builder who continued woodworking by making walking canes and other objects. He loved to hunt and fish. Mr. Hartley was a United States Army veteran, having served during World War II. He was a member of Parkway Baptist Church in Bristol and a member of The Gideons International in Elizabethton. Survivors include his wife of almost 62 years, Elva Davis Hartley, of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Ruth and Daniel Spears, Elizabethton; three sons and daughters-in-law, John and Trish Hartley, Mountain City, James and Sheila Hartley and Billy and Melanie Hartley, all of Elizabethton; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Charlotte R. Hartley and Clara White, both of Mountain City. Several nieces and nephews also survive. A memorial service for Mr. Hartley will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 20, at Hunter Memorial Baptist Church with Rev. Gary Perkins and Rev. Haskel Ingram officiating. Music will be under the direction of Kyle Smith, Joy Scalf and Angie Odom. There will be a gathering of friends in the fellowship hall of the church following the memorial service. The family requests no flowers and that donations be made in memory of Mr. Hartley to The Gideons International, P.O. Box 1951, Elizabethton, TN 37643. Mr. Hartley was interred in the Rittertown Baptist Church Cemetery in Hampton.
