A native of Roan Mountain, he was the son of the late Garrett and Carrie Bowling Hopson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Rebecca Marlene Hopson; a son, John Alfred Hopson; and two brothers, Harry Hopson and Billy Hopson. Mr. Hopson was a veteran of World War II, going into service on June 8, 1943, a few days after graduating from Cloudland High School. He was discharged from the service on Feb. 17, 1946. He was a member of the 822nd Military Police, where during World War II he took part in battles in Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. On Aug. 30, 1944, he went ashore on Utah Beach with the U.S. Ninth Army. He received the American Theater Ribbon, E.A.M.E. Theater Ribbon with three Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal and Victory Medal. He was employed in the chemical lab at North American Rayon Corp. for 45 years, retiring in 1991. He was a member of the United Textile Workers Clerical Union 2614, serving several years as secretary and treasurer. He was a trustee of the Happy Valley Credit Union for many years and also served as chairman. He served on the Carter County Board of Education for 12 years and as a Carter County Commissioner for eight years. He was a member of Valley Forge United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Martha Evelyn Hopson; one son, Dr. Victor W. Hopson and wife Nancy L. Hopson of Johnson City; one granddaughter, Victoria Lynn Hopson of Johnson City; three sisters, Edith Howard of Life Care Center, Elizabethton, Sarah Whitehead of Roan Mountain, and Lucy Whitehead and husband Joe of Roan Mountain; four sisters-in-law, Roma Lee Hopson of Knoxville, Arizona Hopson of Hampton, Margaret Dudney of Chattanooga, and Edna Wise of Akron, Ohio; four special nieces also survive, Greta Riddle of Morristown, Suzanne Galyon of Roan Mountain, Dr. Tina Dudney McCormack of Knoxville and Carlene Stillman of Kingsport; one special nephew, Garry Hopson of Hampton, and several other nieces and nephews. The family would like to give a special thank you to Mildred Winters, Adventa Hospice and for the support of friends and neighbors. A memorial service will be held at Valley Forge United Methodist Church, 3974 Highway 19E, Elizabethton, on Saturday, Oct. 8, with Dr. Paul Humphrey officiating. The family will receive friends at the church form 6-7 p.m. prior to the service. At other times, friends may call at the residence. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Valley Forge United Methodist Church Building Fund or Carter County Rescue Squad. Private disposition will be at a later date.
